Holiday apartment in Derventa: Culture and the Ukrina in late summer

At the end of August, Derventa has two recurring connections with the Ukrina: Derventski vašar takes place every year on its banks, begins on 28 August, the Orthodox feast of Velika Gospojina, and lasts several days. Derventa is also associated with the phenomenon known as the “blossoming of the Ukrina”. On summer evenings and nights, swarms of aquatic insects appear above and on the waters.

Culture

The Derventa Cultural Centre is located in the former Dom-JNA building in the town centre. It hosts theatre and film performances, exhibitions of paintings and photographs, literary evenings and book presentations, performances by folklore groups, and concerts. The centre’s programme therefore includes various forms of performing arts, visual arts, literature, folklore and music.

Designated monuments are also part of Derventa’s cultural landscape. The site and remains of the building complex of the Gradska džamija in Derventa are designated as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The building complex of the municipal infrastructure of the old urban water supply system in Derventa is likewise designated as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The cultural and historical complex of Detlak is located 13 kilometres from Derventa. It comprises a monastery church, a medieval necropolis, grain pits carved into stone and a cave.

Active pursuits

The “Olimp” sports and recreation centre is located on the Ukrina next to the town park. It has an Olympic-size pool, a recreational pool and a children’s pool, sports courts, a tennis court and a bowling alley. The recurring events calendar also includes the cycling event “Biciklom manastirima Ukrinske doline”. It takes place in late June or early July and has been held since 2012.

Geography

Derventa is a hub for the main routes Brod–Derventa–Doboj–Sarajevo–Ploče and Bijeljina–Derventa–Banjaluka. These are supplemented by the regional routes Derventa–Srbac–Gradiška and Derventa–Modriča. These four transport corridors form part of the geographical classification of the town.

Regional products

The Derventa area offers good conditions for growing plums and grapevines. They are used to produce rakija and wine. Both agricultural products are therefore directly connected with the regional production conditions described above.
