Holiday apartment in Zidine: traces of culture between stećak and the Drina

Zidine combines distinctive cultural and historical traces with regional experiences. A stećak necropolis is located at the site. Near Kopači, Zidine is also identified as a settlement from the Roman era. These two indications alone lead into a landscape where archaeological evidence, sites of remembrance and the history of the surrounding area stand closely alongside one another.

Culture and history

In the municipality of Novo Goražde, Samobor is a state-protected national monument. Samobor was first mentioned in written sources in 1397. The historical heritage of the municipality also includes the Church of Saint George in Donja Sopotnica, built in 1446. The Goražde printing house is of particular importance to the region’s written history: it was the first printing house in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina, remained in operation until 1523 and printed three books.

Another site of remembrance is located in Zidine near Kopači, in the municipality of Novo Goražde. A memorial was erected there for 126 Bosniaks killed in 1941. The memorial stands in the local Zidine cemetery in Kopači, bears the names of 36 victims and is modelled on a stećak. It was erected on 10 June 2017.

Archaeological traces

The fields around Kopači also preserve traces of older settlement history. Remains of three villas have been recorded on a diluvial field in Kopači; one of them is located in the Surduk field in the hamlet of Zidine. Remains of a presumably Roman villa rustica were identified in the Surduk–Zidine field. The burial mound at Surduk–Zidine was removed during road construction; about 24 graves were discovered in the process. A large burial mound with a diameter of about 40 m is said to have stood at the Surduk–Zidine site. On the other side of the road, closer to the Drina, the remains of a second, also disturbed burial mound were visible.

Geographical setting

In the narrower sense, Novo Goražde comprises the settlements of Sopotnica, Zidine, Slatina, Kopači, Mašići and Gradac. In the municipality of Novo Goražde, Samobor is situated on a cliff of Mount Gostun near Ustiprača and overlooks the Janjina gorge. The remains of Samobor can only be accessed from the south, from the Čajniče side.
