Kotor Varoš combines riverbanks, nature experiences, cultural events and historical traces to create a diverse travel destination. Nature

In the surroundings of Kotor Varoš, Cvrcka Canyon features numerous cascades, plunge pools, waterfalls and caves. A hiking trail runs along the entire length of the canyon, passing through picturesque landscapes and by authentic watermills. This creates a compact area in which different forms of water and landscape exist side by side.

Also in the surrounding area, Skakavac is the largest and best-known waterfall. It plunges from a height of around 20 metres; local ecologists and mountaineers have prepared access to the waterfall. Within the municipality, the fishing area includes the Vrbanja and its numerous tributaries. The waters are rich in fish, especially brown trout.

Riverbanks and Leisure

Kupalište Bjeline is located on the Vrbanja in Kotor Varoš. For this bathing area, a sloping footpath was planned to provide access to the Vrbanja. In the town, the municipal outdoor swimming pool “Brana” also provides relaxation and refreshment in summer.

The “Brana” promenade is 215 metres long and is used for sport and recreation. The prepared promenade is also available to angling clubs, sports clubs, environmental groups and other associations for programme activities. It is therefore not merely a stretch along the water, but also a place for organised activities.

The Gradsko šetalište riverside promenade runs along the Vrbanja and is used exclusively by pedestrians. The Gradsko šetalište has 11 benches and 20 concrete waste bins.

Culture and History

The “Sabor folklora” is a traditional cultural event in Kotor Varoš. Eleven cultural and artistic associations performed at this event. The participants made their way through Kotor Varoš to the grounds of the Centre for Culture, Sport and Information.

Visual art also has an established place here: the Likovna kolonija in Kotor Varoš is a traditional visual arts event. The “Kotor Varoš 2024” exhibition displayed 23 artworks created during this year’s Likovna kolonija in the gallery space of the cinema hall in Kotor Varoš.

In the surroundings of Kotor Varoš lies the medieval Kotor Fortress above the left bank of the Vrbanja and above the Bobas River. It was an important stronghold of the Jajce Banate and protected access to Jajce from the northwest.

Culinary Traditions and Local Character

The “Dolinom Vrbanje” rakija festival features exhibition stands, tastings of various homemade rakijas and insights into the regional tradition of fruit growing and rakija production. A recurring culinary event is the Kotlićijada; its 13th edition took place in 2022. The Kotorvaroško ljeto 2026 programme also included the event “Veče domaće kuhinje i radinosti”.

The local character also includes distinctive items featuring motifs of the town. A souvenir shop in Kotor Varoš sells authentic handicrafts, individually designed mugs, magnets and various garments, among other things.

Getting There

Within the municipality of Kotor Varoš, the M-4 main road between Banja Luka and Doboj forms the most important transport route. It connects the municipality with the Banja Luka Region and the Doboj Region.
