Holiday Apartment in Ograde: Nature, Culture and the Ćiro Trail
Around Ograde, a local community, sacred sites and natural areas come together with historic routes and regional products. Ograde and Ubla belong to the same local community of Zubci, based in Grab. Even today, families from Ograde use the cemetery by the Church of Svetа Petka in Grab. It is located in the Zubci field, surrounded by a stone wall, and lies directly beside the road. Coming from Trebinje via Tuli, the cemetery is 1,000 metres before Grab on the left-hand side.
Nature
In the surroundings of Ograde, the Orjen Massif belongs to the Mediterranean biogeographical region. It covers approximately 18,156 hectares with caves, forests, grassland, mountain pastures and meadows; the caves are not open to the public. In the wider surrounding area, Vjetrenica is a protected natural monument and tourist destination with approximately 6,700 metres of explored underground passages. This cave world includes extensive passages and chambers, sinter formations, lakes, several waterfalls and several permanent streams.
The landscape around the area also includes Ubla, an excursion area offering opportunities to enjoy nature and for excursion tourism. Strač Fortress offers views of Zupci, Petrovo Polje, Trebinje Forest and Trebinje. At the same time, it is considered one of the largest Austro-Hungarian fortifications in the Balkans.
Culture
The Svetog Đorđa Monastery was built at Bravenik in the first half of the 13th century. The Church of Svetog Đorđa at Bravenik serves as the parish church for the entire Zubci plateau. Today, the monastery exists as an active brotherhood with active monastic and liturgical life. The paving of the road gave it a better connection to the Trebinje–Herceg Novi road and to the road towards Zubačka Ubla.
The Vučija Bridge also points to an older history of transport and construction: it stands on the site of a former Roman road that led from Dubrovnik to Montenegro and is considered a 13th-century structure. Kaluđerska Cave is associated with monks who fled to the eastern mountains after the destruction of the monastery.
In Ubla, the event “Iz ustanka nicaše sloboda” is traditionally held to preserve folk traditions and customs. Thus, alongside the buildings, traditional forms of cultural life also remain in the surroundings of Ograde.
Experiences
In the wider surroundings of Ograde, the Ćiro Trail follows the former route of a narrow-gauge railway. Its landscapes are characterised by old railway stations, tunnels and stone bridges. The Orjen Massif is used for hiking, mountaineering and caving activities. The Ubla excursion area also offers opportunities for recreational winter sports.
There are opportunities for fishing and swimming on the Sušica River; bathing spots and a campsite are located along its course.
Regional Products
In the wider surroundings of Ograde, the Herzeg House shop offers regional products such as cheese, Pršut, honey and wine. The Green Market in Trebinje sells regional food products and is also a tourist attraction.
