Vrelo Bosne is the source area of the Bosna River and is located southwest of Sarajevo below the slopes of Igman and Bjelašnica. Landscaped paths lead to lakes with swans; Velika aleja is suitable for walking, jogging and cycling.

Vrelo Bosne can be reached by tram to the terminus in Ilidža. From there, it is about a ten-minute walk to the start of the 3.5-kilometre-long Velika aleja.

Nature and landscape

The Skakavac area offers good conditions for hiking, mountain biking and various extreme sports. The Skakavac waterfall is 98 metres high and is one of the largest waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bijambare combines rolling mountain meadows, dense forests and limestone ridges. The Middle Bijambare Cave has been developed, illuminated and opened to visitors; its approximately 500-metre-long route leads along a paved path through four chambers. Bijambare also has cycling, educational and forest trails.

A tourist train operates between the entrance to Bijambare and the centre of the core area.

The protected landscape of Trebević is divided into three protection zones, including a strictly protected core area. During the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Trebević hosted bobsleigh and luge competitions. The Čolina Kapa astronomical observatory is part of the cultural and historical heritage of the protected landscape of Trebević. Trebević also offers opportunities for hiking and mountain biking and can be reached by Sarajevo cable car.

Bentbaša offers facilities for walking, running and cycling, as well as recreational opportunities for families. The area comprises 70 habitat types, 169 plant species and 50 bird species. Kozija ćuprija is a single-arch stone bridge made of local white stone and tuff; its design is attributed to the 16th century.

Culture and history

The Sarajevo 1878–1918 Museum presents the period of Austro-Hungarian rule and Sarajevo’s development into a modern urban centre in a permanent exhibition.

The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded in 1888 and is the country’s oldest Western-style cultural and scientific institution. The purpose-built complex comprises four pavilions and a botanical garden and was inaugurated in 1913. The medieval department preserves approximately 11,500 objects from Bosnian-Herzegovinian medieval culture dating from the 6th to the 15th century and has two open-air exhibitions with stećci tombstones.

The Butmir side of the Tunel spasa, which is open to visitors, offers a historical experience at the authentic site of the tunnel’s construction and operation, as well as an exhibition on the siege of Sarajevo. The Tunel spasa includes the original entrance on the Butmir side, 25 metres of authentic tunnel and 100 metres of revitalised original tunnel tube representing the interior of the tunnel during its operation from 1993 to 1995.

Brusa Bezistan was built in 1551 by Rustem Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent. The building houses the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Sarajevo, whose archaeological presentations cover prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages. The public institution Museum of Sarajevo comprises five museum buildings and presents the history of Sarajevo from prehistory to the Austro-Hungarian period.

The Dolovi necropolis in the village of Umoljani comprises 53 medieval tombstones, 11 old nišani and the remains of an unexplored building, possibly a church. Dolovi in the village of Umoljani is designated as a national monument. The Dolovi necropolis is located 1.5 kilometres from the entrance to Umoljani, next to the local road.

Winter and rock

The Babin Do ski resort has eight ski runs, five children’s runs, three gondola lifts and five ski lifts, all leading to the summit of Bjelašnica at 2,067 metres.

The Kotlovi via ferrata on Bjelašnica offers rock climbing with steel cables and climbing aids; the routes are classified as difficulty levels A, B and C.
