Holiday apartment in Ljubovčići: History and trails to Hranisava

Ljubovčići is a starting point for the ascent to Hranisava. The route follows a well-marked trail uphill along wooded slopes and reaches a summit elevation of 1,964 metres.

Nature

Immediately below Ljubovčići, the Ljubovača forms, also known as Ljubovački potok. It is formed by the confluence of two smaller streams. Historically, the route from Ljubovčići led across Bjelašnica into the Neretva Valley, pointing to an older connection between the village and the mountain and valley regions of Bosnia.

History

The history of Ljubovčići dates back to 1468. At that time, the village was first mentioned under the names Lepugčić and Lubogovčić as a village in the Nahije Gradčac district. An entry from 1565 describes Ljubovčići as a kasaba where the spahi Mehmed built a mosque.

The 1604 census also mentions the village: it recorded a mosque mahalle there with 15 households. A mosque built during Ottoman rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first half of the 16th century played a special role in the development of Ljubovčići. The area around the mosque developed into a significant marketplace and was given the name Pazarić.

Pazarić had long been a ferry crossing used by a trade route. In this historical setting, Katib Mahmud also built a busy caravanserai. An ancient inscribed stone was found in September 1892 on the bank of the small Ljubovčića stream near Pazarić, close to a mosque. Today, it is located near the National Museum in Sarajevo.

Hiking trails

From Ljubovčići, the hiking route to the nearby Podgradina hut via Bor takes about 1.5 hours. The shortest and easiest route from Ljubovčići to the Stanari hut also leads via Bor; the hike is about 10 kilometres long and involves around 800 metres of elevation gain. The hiking trail to the Stanari hut runs entirely through the forest. Except for the first section, it is well marked, and there is a signpost at every junction.

To access the Hranisava route, follow the Sarajevo–Mostar road to Pazarić and turn there towards Ljubovčići. Another connection is via the Šavnici hut: it can be reached by car as far as Ljubovčići and then on foot in about 20 minutes.

Huts

The Podgradina hut is located at an elevation of 1,350 metres below Gradinska stijena and is surrounded by dense forest. It has 20 sleeping places, a large common room, a kitchen and an indoor toilet.

Šavnici serves as a starting point for hikes to the Podgradina hut in about 1.5 hours, to Stanari in about 2.5 hours, to Sitnik in about 3 hours, to Hranisava in about 3.5 hours, to the observatory in about 6 hours, and to Mehina Luka in about 2 to 3 hours. These times indicate the respective hiking connections from Šavnici.

The “Bjelašnički dan” event also represents the area’s long-standing connection with mountaineering. It is the mountaineering event with the longest tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
