Vrančići – Stećci, Memorial Sites and Landscape | Holiday Apartment

Vrančići reveals itself through specific names, forms and traditions: traces of culture, memorial sites, connections to the landscape and a place name from prehistoric times give the settlement a clearly recognizable character. This creates a multifaceted picture between local history and the wider regional surroundings.

Culture

The Vrančići–Grivići stećak necropolis comprises 15 stećci. This identifies a clearly defined collection of these characteristic stone tombstones.

The largest stećak in the Vrančići–Grivići necropolis measures 250 × 147 × 65 centimetres and weighs more than five tonnes. Its size is thus just as specific as its classification within the necropolis.

The top of the largest stećak in the Vrančići–Grivići necropolis bears a cross ornament with circular endings. A small cross is additionally carved into one of the southeastern circular endings.

In present-day Vrančićko greblje there is a presumably late-medieval burial structure made of upright stone slabs. It is covered by a single slab, which is now broken into three pieces.

Several old nišani in Vrančićko greblje document continuity in burial traditions from the age of the stećci to the nišani.

In the newer settlement of Vrančići, Igrišća is a prehistoric toponym. It refers to a place for games, socializing and gatherings of the village community at that time.

Landscape

The Borak landscape area lies about 300 metres southwest of Vrančići, in the direction of Mount Ormanj. It covers approximately 15 dunams of meadow and woodland.

Mount Lokvanjsko Brdo is located in the vicinity of Vrančići.

History

Zmajevac Fortress is located in the wider regional surroundings of Vrančići.

The synagogue known as the Sarajevo Synagogue is located in the wider regional surroundings of Vrančići.

In the area of present-day Grivići there are three necropolises with 97 stećci. Grivići, Drozgometva and Vrančići presumably formed a territorial unit called Drozgometva in the Middle Ages.

Remembrance

During the traditional observance of Dan šehida, a šehidsko mezarje and a memorial site are visited in Vrančići. Vrančići is also among the memorial sites visited during this traditional observance in the municipality of Hadžići.

The Vrančići memorial cemetery commemorates Midhat Drina and Ejub Drina. Both were killed in the attack on Vrančići on 21 June 1992.
