Ilijaš combines impressive karst landscapes with significant evidence of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s history and a diverse events programme. At Bijambare, nature experiences lead into caves and along forest paths, while Kopošići, Višnjica and other places in the Ilijaš area draw attention to Stećci, old town complexes and vibrant cultural traditions.

Nature and trails

Bijambare is a karst landscape with karst caves, sinkholes and karst shafts. This landscape can be experienced particularly vividly in the middle Bijambare Cave: it has been prepared, illuminated and opened to visitors. The tour follows a paved path through four chambers. The Bijambare trail network also includes cycling, educational and forest trails. Another nature and adventure destination is located at Farm Hukić in Ljubnići, which is home to more than 20 animal species.

Culture and history

Several necropolises with Stećci are among Ilijaš’s historical points of reference. The necropolis with Stećci in Kopošići is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and contains more than 30 Stećci. Near Bijambare lies the Mramorje necropolis with 39 Stećci dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Another Mramorje necropolis lies near Drveni grad and is presented as an attraction for visitors to Bijambare.

The historic Stari grad Dubrovnik complex in Višnjica is also a national monument in the Ilijaš municipality. A pilot cultural route connects the Kopošići necropolis with the old Bosnian town of Dubrovnik. Several directions to the old town have been recorded: from the north, a gravel road leads almost to its walls; it can also be reached from the west, south and southeast.

Educational, literary, theatre and music programmes were announced for “Ilijaški Dani” 2026; the manifestation was announced for the periods from 30 June to 7 July and from 14 to 21 July. Its programme included an evening of folklore featuring folk dances, traditional costumes and music dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage.

The International Children’s Folklore Show opened with a parade of participants through Gradsko šetalište Ilijaš. At its 14th edition in Ilijaš, groups from Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Greece and the Czech Republic performed. The exhibition “Kulturno naslijeđe Ilijaša” was intended to be accessible to visitors throughout the year.

Winter, sports and children’s programmes

The traditional winter manifestation “Ilijaška zima” took place from 27 December 2025 to 10 January 2026 at several locations in Ilijaš and offered cultural, sports and educational programmes for different age groups. These included children’s workshops, theatre performances, book presentations and film screenings in Ilijaš. The “Zimski kup Ilijaš” took place in the “Rašid Buća” Sports Hall in Ilijaš from 3 to 9 January.

The road race “Ilijaš Run Challenge 5K” is also part of the 2026 events programme and was held for the second time that year. A five-kilometre main race, a crawling race and Kids Run races were announced for the 2026 edition. The annual programme thus brings together different forms of culture, sport and education, each with its own dates and venues.
