Holiday apartment in Ilidža: Vrelo Bosne, Velika Aleja and history

Ilidža derives its character from nature, outdoor activities, cultural history and water. Vrelo Bosne is the source area of the Bosna River. Vrelo Bosne has six springs and numerous watercourses that merge into a single watercourse known as Mala Bosna.

Nature and paths

The Vrela Bosne area is equipped with facilities for spending time in nature and a children's playground. Paved walking paths in Vrelo Bosne provide access to lakes where swans live.

Velika Aleja is suitable for walking, jogging and cycling. It is one of the Velika and Mala Aleja avenues laid out in 1893. A total of 3,000 chestnut and plane trees were planted along these avenues; Velika Aleja is 3.5 km long. Vrelo Bosne can be reached by tram to the last stop in Ilidža. From there, it is about a ten-minute walk to the beginning of the 3.5 km-long Velika Aleja.

The fifth charity run, “Stojčevac 5K”, took place on 13 June; its entire route ran through the protected area of Vrela Bosne.

Culture and history

The prehistoric settlement of Butmir is designated as a national monument. The Butmir archaeological site lies on the right bank of the Željeznica, not far from the modern settlement of Butmir, and is the oldest and best-known archaeological site in Ilidža. Rimski Most is a protected cultural monument.

The settlement at Ilidža was founded as early as the 1st century AD. The Roman settlement developed around sulphur springs with healing properties. In the 3rd century, the ancient settlement at Ilidža reached its greatest prosperity and had already attained the status of a colony. Thus, the documented historical traces extend from the beginnings of the settlement to its Roman heyday.
