Holiday apartment in Tomelilla: Nature Reserves and Culture

The municipality of Tomelilla has 15 nature reserves. Hiking trails in the municipality lead through Österlen’s cultural landscape, deciduous forests and along waterways. This landscape is complemented by a rare sandy steppe landscape, wetlands with diverse flora and fauna, and sites with a history of mills, industry and culture.

Nature

The Drakamöllan Nature Reserve encompasses a rare sandy steppe landscape on calcareous sandy soil. A white-marked hiking loop of approximately three kilometres runs through the central part of the reserve. The nine-kilometre Blåvingeleden circular trail also passes through Drakamöllan and then through the Lillehem, Maglehem and Kumlan nature reserves.

The 20-kilometre-long Fyledalen valley is crossed by the Fyleån river through a flat grazing landscape. Seventeen of the 19 bat species found in Sweden have been recorded there. In the centre of Fyledalen, at the former brickworks, there are three hiking trails as well as parking spaces, information boards and a barbecue and picnic area.

In the Borstakärr wetlands, visitors can walk along a boardwalk over the marsh and stop on a small island for birdwatching. The Borstakärrs våtmarker hiking trail is 2.7 kilometres long. Surveys recorded around 320 different plant species there. Grass frogs, moor frogs, tree frogs and common toads have also become established; black storks, white-tailed eagles and ospreys have also been observed.

Trails

Gårdlösaleden is a twelve-kilometre hiking trail through farmland, grazed meadows and beech forests. In Skåne Tranås, the approximately two-kilometre Byarundan forms a circular route through the village. Twelve illustrated information boards provide brief information about the history of each location. Byarundan runs on a paved surface and is therefore also accessible to visitors with physical disabilities.

Roads 11 and 19 pass by the Kronoskogen area. There are cycle paths from Tomelilla to the area, and buses on Skåneexpressen routes 4 and 5 stop at the Svampakorset stop at least once an hour. The southernmost section of the cycle path runs from Brösarp in the municipality of Tomelilla to Simrishamn.

Culture

Hallamölla has five rapids with a combined drop of 23 metres, making it one of the highest waterfalls in Skåne. The history of the Hallamölla mill dates back to the 15th century; the present mill building dates from the 1850s. The Hallamölla mill is demonstrated to visitors during annual openings.

Andrarums Alunbruk was founded by Jochum Beck in 1637. At the peak of its development in the mid-18th century, it was the largest industrial enterprise in Northern Europe. The Kulturhuset in Tomelilla houses a library, an art gallery, a cultural school and a jazz archive. The jazz archive contains around 18,000 items, including approximately 8,000 LP records. The cultural programme includes lectures, theatre performances and music evenings.

At Smakbruket, visitors can taste lamb sausage and locally pressed juice. Appeltorps Lamm & Vilt is a small farm shop with lamb and game products from the surrounding area.
