Discover Tomelilla: Culture, Nature and a Distinctive Local History
Accommodation in Tomelilla
Tomelilla combines local history, culture and nature-based recreation in a variety of ways. Anyone looking for a holiday rental for a trip with different interests can choose between art and music, walks, swimming facilities and historical discoveries. Some experiences are located within the town, while other destinations can be found a few kilometres outside Tomelilla.
Culture and History in the Town
Kulturhuset offers a varied cultural programme with lectures, theatre performances and music evenings. All public areas of Kulturhuset are accessible, for example, via a lift. Tomelilla konsthall also gives the town’s cultural scene its own profile: it was built in 1965 and was one of the first rural art galleries in Sweden.
The statue Artemis, donated by Carl Milles, stands in the market square. Another notable work is the sculpture Den onämnbare, created by Peter Tillberg in 1982. It stands at the entrance to the town hall and is approximately four metres high. Those interested in the town’s development can also view the historical map “plan öfver Tomelilla” by Knut Esbjörn Österlin from 1892. It is a historical document about Tomelilla and shows, among other things, businesses and buildings from that time, including innkeeper Jeppsson’s new hotel building on the market square, the post office and today’s railway station.
The Jazz Archive preserves a personal collection of swing and big-band jazz. The focus is on American jazz from 1940 to 1960; the programme evenings are open to everyone. The Tomelilla market is a long-standing tradition dating back to 1871 and adds another special connection to local history to the town’s cultural character.
Green Spaces and Nature Experiences
Stadsparken is located in the centre of Tomelilla. More than 200 trees define the park, and there is a pond in the northern section. Stadsparken has been a popular place for walks since the 1920s and a meeting place on holidays and festival days. The municipal Skogsbacken med Väladalen nature reserve is located in the immediate vicinity of Tomelilla’s town area.
For recreation in a larger natural setting, Kronoskogen nature reserve is a good choice. It is located in Tomelilla Municipality, borders the Tosselilla amusement park and the Svampabanan race track, and lies a few kilometres outside Tomelilla. It offers good opportunities for recreation. When choosing your holiday rental, you can therefore consider whether you primarily want to plan for culture in the town or also include nature destinations in the surrounding area.
Active and Relaxing Days
The GPS-guided Tomelillarundan in the Shuttle app uses buildings, works of art and locations to convey the history, development and present-day character of the town area. The app can be downloaded free of charge. For exercise, Aktivitetsparken offers a skate park and an outdoor table-tennis table. You can also play tennis or basketball there free of charge at any time without making a reservation.
Österlenbadet offers a 25-metre pool, a children’s pool, a combined pool with warmer water, a whirlpool, a dry sauna, a steam sauna and a cold-water bath. The facilities also include swimming lessons, early-morning swimming, regular water aerobics and Hydrohex water aerobics with video instructions. The outdoor fitness centre at Kastanjeskolan is located between an artificial-turf pitch and the Hiet woodland area.
