Holiday apartment in Åstorp – hiking, culture and nature in Skåne

Åstorp combines trails through nature with a rich cultural and mining history. The municipality offers nature, locally produced food, culture and activities. Trails and landscape

The Tingvalla recreation area has six trails for hiking or jogging. The Skåneleden Ås till ås begins in Åstorp at the foot of Söderåsen and leads to Brösarp in Österlen. Simple campsites with windbreaks and toilets are located along the entire route.

For a shorter walk, there is Åstorp’s Hälsans Stig. The five-kilometre-long, accessible and illuminated trail has no stairs, high kerbs or significant inclines. Another connection between nature and local history is offered by the six-kilometre-long trail Kvidingeprofilen. It combines varied nature and cultural experiences and conveys Kvidinge’s historical role in Skåne and in Åstorp Municipality.

The municipality’s natural landscape can also be explored by bicycle: the Klippan–Åstorp and Åstorp–Ängelholm sections of Cykelleden Skåne run through this landscape. Åstorp is also home to the municipal Kalvahagen nature reserve. Beech forest and grazing land characterise the area, which forms an important connection between the centre of Åstorp and Söderåsen. There is also a nature playground made of robinia wood in the form of an obstacle course.

The approximately 2.7-kilometre-long Makadamrundan runs around the old quarry in Åstorp. The route offers views of the quarry and towards Helsingborg.

History and culture

The mining history is present in several places. Nyvångshögen is a slag heap from the former mining area; hard coal was extracted there from 1907 to 1966. Nyvångs gruvmuseum explains how work was carried out in Sweden’s largest coal mine and how a new mining community emerged around a hundred years ago.

Gyllenbielkeska Hospitalet is one of Sweden’s oldest surviving poorhouses. Part of the building dating from 1729 is now used as a museum. Events such as a Christmas market and craft days are held annually in Perslund.

Kulturhuset Björnen offers events of various kinds for all age groups and interests. The building was originally an EFS church built in 1919. Åstorp railway station can be reached on foot from Kulturhuset Björnen in just under five minutes.

The art gallery presents a varied annual exhibition programme featuring national and local contemporary artists. Tomarps Kungsgård is another historical and artistic focal point. The complex was originally a Danish medieval castle and was converted into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century. Today, Tomarps Kungsgård serves as an art gallery focusing on Swedish and international contemporary art.

The building is a two-storey, four-winged stone structure surrounding a paved courtyard. Outside the wings, the remains of a moat are visible in the form of elongated ponds. The oldest, northern wing contains parts of a defensive tower built around 1300. During the main season, Tomarps Kungsgård hosts music, theatre, workshops and other events.

Water and activities

Kvidinge friluftsbad has a 25-metre pool, a children’s and teaching pool, and a paddling pool. The facilities also include boulders, beach volleyball, football, a boules court and an outdoor gym.

Local food

Food from the surrounding area is also part of Åstorp’s local character. The farm shop at Sigvard Månsgård in Åstorp offers a basic range of products. In addition, meals for collection can be ordered from the production kitchen. Sigvard Månsgård serves street food at markets and fairs; on Sundays, Sommargrillen is held at the farm. Its own lamb is used for this.

Tomarps Kungsgård also combines culture and culinary delights: the café serves homemade bread, open sandwiches, savoury pies, pastries, biscuits and light lunches.
