Discover Åstorp: Nature Trails, Ravines and Culture
Accommodation in Åstorp
Åstorp combines impressive natural experiences with distinctive cultural sites. Between deciduous forests, ravines, quarry trails and historic buildings, you will find a range of ways to shape your trip. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Åstorp can choose their accommodation according to their own priorities: the trails, short excursions into nature or cultural discoveries in Åstorp and Perslund.
Nature between forest, ravine and quarry
The Tingvalla recreation area has six trails for walking or jogging. Tingvallaskogen includes biodiverse deciduous forests and a ravine that runs through the area. This gives Åstorp a variety of landscapes to consider when planning your days. Another natural area is Kalvahagen, a municipal nature reserve characterised by beech forest and pastureland. At the entrance is an arboretum with various tree species found on Söderåsen.
Fårahagen also features a varied landscape. Broad-crowned trees, flowering shrubs and open, flower-rich areas characterise the site and support a diverse insect and bird population. If you would like to experience different natural settings during your stay, you can include these places alongside the trails in Tingvalla in your own plans.
Hiking trails with their own character
The “Brottets bana” trail is 3.9 km long and leads around the quarry. Makadamrundan offers views over the quarry. Both trails therefore focus clearly on the landscape shaped by quarrying. Tingvallaravinen, on the other hand, is a geological relic of earthquakes that broke up the rock from which Söderåsen was formed around 200 million years ago.
Among the distinctive rock formations is Klintagumman, a gneiss rock profile at the northernmost tip of Söderåsen. Björnekulla klint, also known as Klinten, lies on Söderåsen in the middle of Åstorp. There is a viewpoint with views of the northern part of Helsingborg and the western parts of Åstorp. The beginning of the “Från ås till ås” section of the Skåneleden trail is signposted from Åstorp railway station via Perslund and onward towards Tingvalla. Along the SL3 Ås till ås section of the Skåneleden, there are basic campsites with wind shelters and toilets.
Culture in Åstorp and Perslund
Björnekulla Church was inaugurated on the first Sunday of Advent in 1889. It is a neo-Gothic brick cruciform church with a rendered and whitewashed façade. Its chancel windows were designed and painted by the artist Erik Olsson of the Halmstad Group as a triptych. The church also contains a rood cross from the late 13th century, which is now installed as the “entrance” to the chancel. A baptismal font from the early 13th century was transferred from the old church.
Perslund hosts annual events such as a Christmas market and craft days. Perslunds hembygdsgård includes a fully operational Dutch windmill. Its equipment includes millstones, shafts, wooden gears, sail-covered blades and a lifting device for sacks of flour. Those interested in regional traditions and historical technology will find here a different way to experience Åstorp than on the nature trails.
For more culture in the town, Åstorps konsthall is located in Åstorp’s library in the centre of Åstorp. Another site with a distinctive architectural and practical character is the underground air-defence group headquarters in Åstorp: access is via a relatively long and steep staircase; there is no other entrance. This specific access situation should be taken into account when planning your day if you would like to include this site.
Choosing Åstorp as a suitable travel base
When looking for a holiday apartment in Åstorp, it is worth first deciding on your preferred travel rhythm. Nature days can focus on the trails in Tingvalla, forest and pasture landscapes or the view from Björnekulla klint. Those interested in culture can combine Perslund, Björnekulla Church and Åstorps konsthall in different ways.
