Sagunto – Castle, Roman Theatre and Holiday Apartment
Sagunto Castle was built on an Iberian settlement and expanded over the centuries by the Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Christians. In 1931, it was declared a national monument. During a visit, you can see, among other things, the Albacar, the Plaza de Armas, the ancient Roman forum and a historic cistern.
The Teatro Romano de Sagunto also reaches far back into history: it dates from the 1st century and was the first monument on Spain’s list of buildings declared national monuments in 1896. The theatre seats around 8,000 people and has a diameter of more than 90 metres. Various theatrical performances still take place there, especially in summer.

History and Theatre
The Via del Pòrtic is a museum archaeological site containing the remains of a Roman colonnaded street, tabernae and sacred funerary buildings. The Domus dels Peixos complements this picture as a Roman house from the 2nd century AD; its rooms are arranged around an atrium.
The “Sagunt i la Mar” Interpretation Centre in Grau Vell is a museum with five rooms and two areas that illustrate the development of the city and this emblematic site over the centuries. The five themed rooms are located in a former 18th-century port warehouse. The Museu Arqueològic de Sagunt originated from a collection of Iberian and Roman inscriptions popularly known as the Cuarto de les Pedres, meaning “Room of the Stones”.
Other destinations in this selection are Almarda and El Port De Sagunt.
Archaeology and Industry
The current collection of the Museu Arqueològic de Sagunt is housed in the Casa del Mestre Peña. Iberian-Roman structures and an Islamic cemetery from the 11th century were found at this historic site. The Casa del Mestre Peña itself is a Gothic building from the 14th century and displays a significant collection of archaeological artefacts from excavations and discoveries in the city.
Another historical layer is represented by Alto Horno número 2. The blast furnace was built in 1922 and rebuilt in the 1960s. Visitors can explore its museum-preserved interior, climb through its levels and enjoy panoramic views from the top.
Coast and Nature
Former port facilities of the city have been preserved in Grau Vell. They include a fortín with a coastal watchtower, battery, warehouses and an enclosed courtyard dating from the 16th and 18th centuries.
Playa de l’Almardá has a dune belt separating the beach from the residential area. The beach is around 1,650 metres long and approximately 100 metres wide; its surface consists of sand and pebbles. Playa de l’Almardá is also home to ecologically valuable flora and fauna.
Marjal dels Moros lies within the municipal areas of Sagunto and Puçol and has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 31 October 1995. At that time, it was designated a special protection area for birds, or ZEPA for short.
