El Port de Sagunt: Port, Beach and Industrial Heritage

El Port de Sagunt showcases its distinctive features where port and industrial history, beach and art come together at specific places to visit. Between historic facilities, walks and Playa Puerto de Sagunto, there are different themes for relaxing, cultural and active days.

Culture and History

Horno Alto nº 2 is 64.20 metres high and has an entrance pavilion for visitors with audiovisual equipment. In 2024, the Generalitat Valenciana declared the blast furnace an Asset of Cultural Interest. Grau Vell also has a clear historic status: under urban planning law, the site is considered a Núcleo Histórico Tradicional and a Bien de Relevancia Local.

In Grau Vell, a traditional fishing quarter forms an ensemble with the monument. The block of houses containing the monument existed no later than 1933. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Begoña provides another cultural accent; it is an eclectic building inspired by the Basílica de Begoña in Bilbao.

The “Sagunt i la Mar” Interpretation Centre in Grau Vell was opened to the public. The Ruta Urban Art includes realistic art, abstraction, illustration and traditional graffiti from the MésqueMurs festival. The route is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Port and Beach

The promenade at the port of Sagunto has an accessible path with a gradient of 4 percent. It combines leisure facilities with a museum-style presentation of the port and Sagunto’s industrial heritage. At Playa Puerto de Sagunto, a beach more than one kilometre long stretches out, with very fine sand and bordered by dunes.

Playa Puerto de Sagunto has sports facilities and amenities for children. There are also access points designed for people with reduced mobility. The beach area and the port promenade therefore establish their own focal points within the townscape, while historic sites and art offerings form a different theme for visitors.

Routes and Industrial Discoveries

On the first floor of the Puerto de Sagunto Tourist Office at Avenida del Mediterráneo 67 is the Centro de Interpretación de la Vía Verde de Ojos Negros. It has an exhibition room and an audiovisual room.

The Vía Verde de Ojos Negros is a 235-kilometre cycle tourism route. It was created from a route used to transport iron ore from Ojos Negros in Teruel to Puerto de Sagunto. The different scales of the routes make it easy to compare short sightseeing formats with a long cycling route when planning your own day trips and excursions.

The “Factory Town” route takes visitors through seven rooms of Puerto de Sagunto’s industrial heritage in sequence.
