The broad Plaza del Rey Don Jaime was created through successive expansions. It is home to the parish church of El Salvador and an interesting belt of barns surrounding the village.

Culture

In the north of Casas Bajas lies the oldest district, with steep, winding streets. The parish church of “Saint Salvador” dates from the 19th century. Together with the central square and the barns surrounding it, this part of the village displays different traces of architectural development.

The restored Molino de Agua watermill has information panels and hosts various temporary exhibitions at certain times of the year. La Barraca Grande is an old building made entirely of stone in the El Pinar area. Thus, the cultural attractions include a mill with changing exhibitions, a historic church building, and a building constructed entirely of stone.

Local Traditions and Cuisine

Los Mayos is celebrated in Casas Bajas on the last night of April. During Los Mayos, the names of the unmarried men and women are drawn by lot from two drums; during the night, young men and women are paired with one another. The festival is therefore tied to a fixed date and a precisely described lottery ritual.

Gachas is a typical dish in Casas Bajas and throughout the Rincón de Ademuz. To prepare it, salt and water are boiled in a copper pot; corn or wheat flour is then added. You can consider the festival, the dish, the village landscape, nature, and the activities as different thematic approaches alongside one another. Nature

The natural springs in Casas Bajas include Armajal, Cañora, and Vandonguillo. There are riverside forests along the Turia in Casas Bajas. Thus, named springs and vegetation along the river meet in the landscape, while the local and cultural history offers a different way of exploring the municipality.

The short PR-CV 131.8 hiking trail begins in Casas Bajas and follows a path that connects to the historic Camino Real de Puebla de San Miguel. The hiking trail also offers a short detour to visit Pino Vicente, one of the park’s monumental trees.

Activity

Rafting can be practiced on the Turia River in Casas Bajas. Canyoning can be practiced in the Malas Noches gorge. The two options mentioned belong to different types of landscape: one is associated with the river, the other with a gorge.
