Salem – Benicadell, cultural heritage and traditional festivals

Several paths lead to the summit of Benicadell, including challenging routes. The area is part of the natural landscape of Salem and its surroundings and is suitable for hiking, climbing and mountain biking.

Paths and landscape

The Senda dels Nevaters (SL-CV 122) leads to the former ice houses Castellet or Barcella at 706 metres above sea level and Paller at 756 metres. Ice was stored in these ice houses and later distributed to neighbouring villages.

The local SL-CV 140 trail passes through the former Muslim gardens of the Foia de Salem and through a thousand-year-old landscape with an exceptional hydraulic heritage planned by Muslims. As a signposted trail with a low level of difficulty, it is suitable for all groups.

There are numerous springs in the Foia de Salem; they are considered externally visible manifestations of aquifers beneath the region’s limestone mountains. The choice of activities—hiking, climbing or mountain biking—can be tailored to personal preferences. Historical traces and festival culture represent different themes for travel planning.

Culture and history

The Barranc de les Coves or Dalt de l’Almud archaeological zone, Abrigo I, is listed in the General Inventory of Valencian Cultural Heritage. A circular route at the Barranc de les Coves or Barranco de las Cuevas can be visited as part of a tour arranged in advance; you can see the caves up close and learn about their history.

Castell de la Barcella is a small Islamic fortress from the 12th century and occasionally served as a watch and signal post from the 11th to the 13th century.

Molí de la Font del Cantal dates back to the time of the Moors and was remodelled into its present form between the 17th and 19th centuries. Next to the mill is Pont del Molí, a picturesque bridge with a semicircular arch over which the Barranc de la Font del Cantal is crossed.

Festivals throughout the year

Salem’s main patron-saint festivals take place from 13 to 29 September in honour of San Miguel, San Roque, the Divina Aurora and Cristo de la Paz. The Festes de Moros i Cristians are a traditional festival held on the second weekend of July in honour of the Mare de Déu del Rosari and the Divina Aurora.
