Serra in the Heart of the Serra Calderona – Trails, Culture and Holiday Apartment

Serra lies in the heart of the Serra Calderona. More than 50 underground cavities, caves and shafts are scattered throughout the municipality. The springs of Serra, in the heart of the Calderona, are places to stop and relax for hikers and visitors. Trails

The GR-10 variant through Serra offers a circular route that begins at Serra Town Hall, passes through the town and covers large parts of the municipality. The Rebalsadors route is also designed as a circular hike: it begins at Serra Town Hall, passes through the town centre and reaches a forest track of Gorrisa via La Pobleta road. The Gorrisa route passes through the municipality of Serra, follows the GR-10 to Font de Deula and continues to the summit of Gorrisa, which offers good views. The yellow Portaceli route is a marked trail in Serra Calderona Natural Park.

Culture

The Ruta de les Escultures is an urban circuit through Serra’s cultural, ethnological and monumental heritage. The Calvari de Serra features stepped terraces with the 14 Stations of the Cross in white chapels that imitate the Gothic style.

Serra Castle is a fortification dating from the 8th to 9th century. It stands on the mountain of the same name at an altitude of 536 metres, near the town, and is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Torre del Señor is a 9th-century Islamic tower on Cantó de la Torre street within the municipality of Serra and is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

The Museu de l'Oli is housed in an oil mill from the late 19th century that was renovated by the municipality of Serra, in the town centre between the church and the Torre del Señor. The Església of Serra was completed in 1800 and built in the neoclassical style by the Valencian architect Francisco Pechuan.

The Cartuja de Portaceli was the first Carthusian monastery founded in the Valencian lands and was established in 1272. A Gothic aqueduct dating from the 15th century is attached to the Cartuja de Portaceli.

Festivals and Cuisine

The Festa de Sant Roc is recognised by the Valencian Community as a festival of provincial tourist interest. Its main event is the Baixà de Sant Roc on the night of 15–16 August.

The Fira de la Calderona-Dia de la Cirera is recognised as a festival of tourist interest by the Valencian Community. It includes a market for local and artisan products, guided tours, traditional craft workshops and the distribution of cherries to visitors.

Serra’s traditional cuisine includes olla amb bledes, sopa coberta and olla amb carabassa.
