Alzira between MUMA, La Murta and Fallas

In Alzira, the MUMA collections range from prehistory to the 15th century and also include historical and artistic materials from the 18th and 19th centuries; the “Islamic Wall” room additionally displays a decorated wall from the 12th to 13th century that was discovered during archaeological excavations. The museum therefore brings together very different historical periods and, alongside individual exhibits, also makes the region’s long development visible.

Culture and history

MUMA has an archaeological window through which the original flooring and preserved sections of the original walls can be seen. Together with the decorated wall, this provides a view of historic building elements and archaeological evidence within the same museum.

La Murta y La Casella features rugged mountain ranges, fertile valleys, caves and viewpoints overlooking Ribera Baixa and Ribera Alta. The landscape thus combines various types of terrain and offers a clear contrast to the enclosed museum and monastery spaces.

Paths and connections

The Pas del Pobre is the final section of the Ruta dels Monestirs and offers hikers spectacular views of the valleys of Aigües Vives, La Casella and La Murta before the route reaches Alzira and La Murta Monastery. The path thus combines experiencing the landscape with the historic destinations mentioned in its route description.

The GR-236 connects the RENFE railway stations of Gandia and Alzira; both stations offer hourly train services to Valencia every day. Unlike the Pas del Pobre, the focus here is not on views over the valleys but on the connection between the railway stations and the onward destination of Valencia.

Festivals and stage performances

The Fallas tradition in Alzira includes a costume parade, an awards ceremony, a flower-offering ceremony and a pasodoble parade. During the main Fallas days from 16 to 19 March, the Fallas casals and revetles in Alzira remain open to visitors until well into the night.

Semana Santa in Alzira is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. In addition to these festival traditions, the established cultural programme of the Gran Teatre d’Alzira includes theatre for young people and adults, family theatre, theatre programmes for schools, music concerts, zarzuelas and dance performances.
