Zarcilla de Ramos: Holiday Apartments Between Hiking Trails and Nature

Zarcilla de Ramos can be explored via specific trails, landscapes and cultural traces. The Ruta El Calar begins in the centre of Zarcilla de Ramos and reaches the Ermita del Cristo after 2.31 km, at an altitude of around 747 m.

On the way

The Ruta Las Loberas begins at the Virgen de la Piedad Church and leads towards the Rincón de los Carranzas landscape area. The Ruta MTB Pericay is a 44 km circular route for mountain bikes and includes a viewpoint from which the Pantano Valdeinfierno and the Sierra del Pericay can be seen.

The Ruta El Calar is a 4.7 km circular hiking route; its stated duration is 1 hour and 5 minutes, and its difficulty level is 1. Under the name Senderismo en Familia Collado del Rincón, there is a circular hiking route in Zarcilla de Ramos on the slope of Cerro del Sordo, at an altitude of 740 m. It begins at the church square and passes the Tornajo washhouse and a stand of centuries-old olive trees. The route is considered an easy hike of around 5 km with little elevation gain on a well-maintained dirt track.

The GR 253 Camino de la Cruz del Alto Guadalentín leads to Zarcilla de Ramos and then continues via El Rincón and Avilés towards the dry fields of the Tierras Altas de Lorca.

Nature

Paths through esparto grass, thyme and rosemary lead towards Cerro del Sagrado Corazón; along the way, arruí, wild boar and ibex can be observed.

Zarcilla de Ramos is crossed by the Río Turrilla and the Ramblas de Periago and Culebrina. These waterways form ecosystems where protected species such as the Greek tortoise and the Spanish pond turtle occur. Las Lomas del Buitre is recognised as a Site of Community Importance because of its biodiversity.

Culture and History

The Fiestas de Zarcilla de Ramos are scheduled from 6 to 9 September. The Fiestas Patronales of Zarcilla de Ramos honour the Virgen de la Piedad every September and include processions and floral offerings.

The Roman archaeological site of El Mingrano is an example of an agricultural villa. Excavations uncovered pottery fragments, numerous tools and various household objects. Room I of the Museo Arqueológico de Lorca displays grave goods from the graves in the rock shelters of El Buitre and Cerro Negro in Zarcilla de Ramos.

Zarcilla de Ramos features a specially designed mural. It depicts local history and culture, customs, the landscape and other symbols that shape the identity of the village.

Zarcilla de Ramos can be reached via the road from Lorca to Caravaca; the turn-off is 16 km from Lorca.
