Culture

Almadraba fishing is still practiced in La Azohía; it takes place from March to August. The Almadraba in La Azohía is classified as an “almadraba de vuelta”. Visitors can watch the Almadraba catch being unloaded at the quay and buy freshly caught bonito at the auction in the Chanca. La Azohía beach also has a predominantly fishing character: local fishermen moor their boats there, and small fish auctions are organised in a building adjacent to the beach when the catch arrives.

The Torre de Santa Elena is part of the coast’s history. The hexagonal watchtower dates from the late 16th century, during the reign of Philip II. It was built to protect the fishermen of La Azohía and to serve as a watchtower warning of pirates along the coast. From La Azohía, the Torre de Santa Elena can be reached via an easily walkable footpath.

Nature

La Azohía lies next to the protected natural area of La Muela–Cabo Tiñoso–Roldán and the Cabo Tiñoso marine reserve. The Cabo Tiñoso–La Azohía area features rugged landscapes as well as Triassic limestone and dolomite cliffs. These cliffs rise from the seabed to heights of between 20 and 200 metres; bottlenose dolphins are found in the area’s waters.

A special maritime feature is the Neptune grass meadow near La Azohía. It is the only one on the coast of the Region of Murcia that blooms every year.

Activities

Underwater, accredited diving schools and clubs in La Azohía offer dives for different levels of experience. On the water, the La Azohía–Cala Cerrada kayaking route leads in less than three hours to a wind-sheltered bay where swimming or snorkelling is possible.

The coast can also be followed on foot. The Sendero de Iglesia a Iglesia hiking trail runs from the port of La Azohía to the church of Isla Plana along a waterfront promenade.

La Azohía lies to the east of Mazarrón Bay and faces west. As a result, the place offers exceptional sunsets.
