La Manga del Mar Menor is an approximately 21-kilometre-long strip of land between Cabo de Palos and Playa de Veneziola. It naturally borders the saltwater lagoon Mar Menor. The narrow strip of land varies in width between 200 metres and 1.5 kilometres. Thus, both the connection between two named coastal points and the alternation between narrower and wider sections shape the appearance of the area.
Landscape
Playa Isla del Ciervo features a natural, interesting environment with calm waters. This beach can be reached via the Autovía de La Manga RM-12, approximately at kilometre 3, as well as on foot, by bicycle, by car or by boat. Playa de La Gola is an easily accessible, shallow beach at one of the golas connecting the Mediterranean with the Mar Menor. Playa de La Gola also has a play area for children.
Water and activities
La Manga del Mar Menor has schools and facilities for various water sports. These include sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing and diving. On the Mar Menor, visitors can rent boats with or without a skipper or take part in tourist boat trips. Playa Lebeche is also one of the accessible beaches: it can be reached via the Gran Vía de La Manga del Mar Menor, and kayaks are available for hire on the beach. The leisure activities mentioned also include nighttime horse rides on the beach and hiking with views of the Mediterranean.
Culture and cuisine
The Faro del Estacio is an emblematic place in La Manga del Mar Menor. The Puente de la Risa is considered a picturesque, emblematic place. Both named sites complement the beach and water experiences with distinctive places in the destination. The cuisine of this area is also specifically associated with fish dishes: arroz caldero, accompanied by gilthead sea bream and alioli, fried fish, and salted fish or fish prepared al espalda are considered typical dishes here.
