Holiday apartment in Los Nietos – Beach and Iberian history
Los Nietos on the coast of the Region of Murcia is associated with a distinctive archaeological site: the Iberian Necropolis of Los Nietos is the only Iberian settlement and necropolis found on this coast. Between the beach, maritime tradition and traces dating back thousands of years, the place presents a multifaceted picture.
Culture
More than 200 cremation burials were uncovered during excavations of the necropolis associated with the settlement of Los Nietos. The first phase of the Iberian settlement of Los Nietos dates to the end of the 5th century BC; it remained in use until the beginning of the 2nd century BC.
The Iberian settlement of Los Nietos is one of the few settlements of this culture documented on the coast of the Region of Murcia. This historical context also includes Los Nietos Viejos II, an open-air Iberian sanctuary dating to the period between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. The settlement, necropolis and sanctuary thus represent different forms of Iberian presence within the same historical context.
Further specific evidence can be seen at the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena – Enrique Escudero de Castro. On display there is a double-bodied vessel from the Iberian settlement of Los Nietos dating from the 4th century BC. Also dating from the 4th century BC are Iberian and Greek ceramics from the settlement of Los Nietos on the Mar Menor in Cartagena, which are exhibited in the same museum.
The more recent memory of the place also has its own documentary connection. The municipal project “Los Nietos en la memoria” involved producing a documentary film about the history of Los Nietos associated with fishing. Archaeological finds and the history of fishing thus provide two distinct chronological perspectives on the place.
Coast
Playa Los Nietos El Arenal is an urban beach. In the Los Nietos beach area, there are bus and FEVE stops in the associated residential developments.
Pedal boats can be rented at Playa Los Nietos El Arenal. There are also diving opportunities and a diving school there.
Tradition
A maritime procession traditionally takes place in Los Nietos for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The procession passes through the streets of Los Nietos to the Club Náutico, where the maritime procession begins. The event connects the town, its streets and the nautical area in a clearly described celebration.
The marina Puerto deportivo de Los Nietos is also part of the town’s maritime character. It has toilets, showers, parking spaces, a slipway and a restaurant.
