Pozo Estrecho combines a flat landscape with a strong cultural and festival tradition. The celebration of the Pelotas Galileas in particular attracts visitors from various parts of the Region of Murcia. Buildings from the early 20th century, a theatrical tradition dating back to the 18th century, and established annual events give the town several defining features.

Landscape

Pozo Estrecho has flat terrain, with average elevations ranging from 45 to 60 metres. To the north, the Rambla del Albujón forms the boundary and also marks the municipal border with Torre Pacheco. From Cartagena, Pozo Estrecho can be reached via a local road through La Palma; from Murcia, the connection to the N-301 leads into the town.

Culture

Villa Carmen, also known as Torre Valeriola, was built around 1906 near Pozo Estrecho railway station. Its main entrance features a canopy with Modernist wrought-iron elements. The manor house and chapel of Torre Nueva were designed in 1904 by master builder Pedro Bernabé. Torre Nueva combines classicist elements in the main building with lobed arches at the porch and a church with an Islamic-inspired character.

Traditions

The parish of San Fulgencio in Pozo Estrecho was founded in January 1699. The Sociedad Artístico Musical Santa Cecilia was established in 1893 and institutionalised Pozo Estrecho’s musical tradition. The Auto de los Reyes Magos, locally known as Los Pastores, is also traditionally performed in Pozo Estrecho; this tradition continues to this day. The town’s theatrical tradition dates back to the 18th century.

Music and Theatre

Every May, the Banda Santa Cecilia performs selected pasodobles at the “Villa de Pozo Estrecho” composition competition, held at the same time as the Fiestas del Campo, Vino, Música y Flores. The Banda Santa Cecilia also takes part in Cartagena’s Semana Santa every year and is requested by various brotherhood groups to perform. The Certamen de Teatro de Pozo Estrecho takes place in February, March and April.

Festivals and Flavours

Pozo Estrecho’s patron saint festivals have been celebrated around 16 January since 1699. The associated festivities include a tasting of the traditional Pelotas Galileas. During the celebration of the Pelotas Galileas, 120 pots were cooked and around 35,000 Pelotas were distributed free of charge; the town’s families had prepared them by hand the previous day. Ventepijo is a festival in Pozo Estrecho featuring concerts, gastronomy and a communal atmosphere.
