Enériz: Camino de Santiago, Eunate and Church Art

Enériz lies on the French-Aragonese Camino de Santiago, whose section from Monreal to Puente la Reina measures 31.52 kilometers, follows a linear route, and is considered moderately difficult. On this section, Enériz is reached five kilometers after Olcoz.

The fourth stage of EuroVelo 1 also passes through Enériz. It runs for 54 kilometers from Pamplona (Iruña) to Estella-Lizarra. Where EuroVelo 1 does not coincide with the Camino de Santiago, it uses minor roads with little traffic.

Culture and History

The parish church of María Magdalena in Enériz was built between 1763 and 1765. The main altar was created with the involvement of the altar maker Juan de Gasteluzar and the sculptor Bernabé Imberto.

The church houses a small Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to Santa Catalina, which was restored in 1997. The altarpiece comes from Enériz’s former Romanesque church and later stood in the hermitage adjoining the cemetery.

It retains its original polychromy with polished gilding and sgraffito grotesques. The Hermitage of Santa Catalina lies within the municipality of Enériz.

Along Calle Mayor, houses made of stone and brick, as well as former palaces, shape the townscape. Historically, wine was one of Enériz’s important agricultural products. Enériz’s patron-saint festivities take place from September 3 to 6.

Nature

The Robo River and the Gabildoa stream cross the municipality of Enériz. The municipality includes the elevations of Montemocha, Chaparral, and Monte Castellano.

Near Enériz and the Camino de Santiago, a small path leads to the Sagrado Corazón monument.

Hiking and Cycling

The Enériz–Santo Domingo–Nekeas–Eunate circular walk is 10.58 kilometers long, follows a circular route, and has 176 meters of elevation gain. It begins in Enériz, heads toward the Hermitage of Santo Domingo, then passes through Nekeas and returns to the starting point via Eunate.

The Enériz–Santo Domingo–Eunate route runs mostly along easily walkable paths; the distances and inclines are not particularly demanding.

Another easy circular walk begins in Enériz and runs between the peaks of V.G. de San Martín and the hill with the hermitage of the same name, which is already located in Añorbe. On the way back, it reaches the Aragonese Camino de Santiago near Enériz.

The circular routes have different focuses: The longer route via Santo Domingo, Nekeas, and Eunate is clearly measured at 10.58 kilometers with 176 meters of elevation gain. By contrast, the route via V.G. de San Martín and the hill in Añorbe is described as easy. Both routes begin in Enériz or return there, while the Camino de Santiago, as a linear route from Monreal to Puente la Reina, has a different route structure.
