Tajonar: Church, Aqueduct and Sierra Landscape

The parish church of San Emeterio and San Celedonio in Tajonar is a Proto-Gothic building constructed around 1200. In the 16th century, it was extended in the choir area, the sacristy, the chapels and the choir. The parish church also houses a Mannerist crucifix from the late 16th century. Thus, a medieval original structure, later structural alterations and furnishings from the early modern period come together in one sacred place. Those interested in architectural history can consider these elements as separate aspects: the architecture points to the construction and extension phases, while the crucifix provides its own art-historical accent.

The Tajonar aqueduct was built at the end of the 18th century to convey water from Subiza to Pamplona. Its subject is therefore not sacred architecture, but the historical function of a water conduit between two named places. The church and aqueduct consequently offer two different cultural perspectives, without their significance having to be combined into a single building or a shared history.

Nature

The Sierra de Tajonar is a mountain ridge that separates the Aranguren Valley from the Elorz Valley. The Sierra de Tajonar contains pine forests, oak forests, pastureland, open scrubland and shrub vegetation. It also includes a mixed stand of oaks and holm oaks, where work has been carried out on coppice maintenance and pruning, along with supplementary planting to improve biodiversity. For a landscape classification, both the different forms of vegetation and the maintenance work on the tree population are therefore relevant. Forest, pastureland, scrubland and the mixed stand constitute distinct nature-related themes rather than simply being subsumed under a general landscape designation.

The Tajonar–Monte Grande–Tajonar route is 6 kilometres long in total. It can be used on foot and on horseback and is rated as easy.
