Lumbier: Gorge, Culture and Trails

The Foz de Lumbier is a 1,300-metre-long, narrow gorge with sheer walls reaching up to 150 metres high. Since 1987, together with the Sierra de Leire and the Foz de Arbayún, it has been designated a nature reserve.

Nature and Trails

The Foz de Lumbier can be crossed on foot, by bicycle, with a pushchair or in a wheelchair. The route begins 1.5 kilometres from Lumbier at the Área de Acogida e Información, where there is a paid car park.

The Vía Verde del Irati follows the former route of the electric railway between Pamplona and Sangüesa. The level path runs alongside the river for just over 6 kilometres and passes through two tunnels carved into the rock. The surroundings of the Foz de Lumbier can also be explored on the Irati by inflatable boat.

Townscape and History

The Centro de Interpretación de las Foces is located in the centre of Lumbier, in the former school building. It organises talks, exhibitions and interpretive excursions in the surrounding area.

Lumbier's Casa Consistorial is a Renaissance building from the late 15th century and is considered the oldest town hall in Navarre. In the parish church, the Baroque main altarpiece is protected as a cultural asset of special interest; it includes 16th-century reliefs and a Renaissance depiction of the Virgin Mary.

Roman remains can be found next to the monastery in Lumbier. These include a 2nd-century mosaic, now installed on the façade, and visible remains of medieval walls.

The medieval bridge in Lumbier was used by pilgrims on their way to the Ermita de la Trinidad. In October 1875, it was the scene of the Battle of La Trinidad during the Third Carlist War.

Lumbier is also home to an 18th-century Baroque palace with a Rococo alabaster coat of arms.

Annual Calendar

The La Trinidad pilgrimage takes place on the Sunday after Pentecost and leads to the Ermita de la Santísima Trinidad. It is located on a ridge of the Sierra de Leyre or Errando at an altitude of 740 metres.

Lumbier's patron saint festivities begin on 30 August. Traditional public celebrations include the Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos, running of the bulls and pelota games.
