Discover Tudela: Cathedral, Archaeology and the Ebro

Tudela brings together history, art, festivals and nature in one city. At its heart is the Catedral de Santa María de Tudela: it was declared a National Monument in 1884 and is the city’s most important landmark. Culture and History

The Cerro de Santa Bárbara is one of the most complete and significant archaeological sites in Navarre and is considered the origin of Tudela’s settlement; remains dating from the 9th century BC have been found there. Archaeological excavations have uncovered sections of the outer fortification perimeter and the walls of houses in the former Jewish quarter.

The Museo Muñoz Sola is located in the former Casa-Palacio de los Veráiz and preserves a Gothic heraldic fragment on its façade. It offers a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions and cultural activities. The museum also houses a collection of 19th-century French paintings assembled by the painter César Muñoz Sola, who was born in Tudela, as well as representative examples of his own work.

Festivals and Traditions

The Ceremonias del Ángel and del Volatín have also formed part of Tudela’s culture since the 14th century. On 19 February 2002, they were declared a festival of national tourist interest (Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional).

El Volatín has appeared on Holy Saturday since 1851 from the balcony of the Casa del Reloj on the Plaza de los Fueros. The Fiestas de la Verdura include gastronomic tours, special menus, vegetable pinchos, cooking classes, tastings and public sampling events.

Sotos del Ebro is a particularly valuable riverside woodland that follows the course of the Ebro through Tudela and offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and wildlife observation.
