Discover Eraul: Church, Hiking Trails and Holiday Apartment

The parish church of San Miguel in Eraul belonged to Iranzu Monastery and was built at the beginning of the 13th century in the late Romanesque style with Cistercian elements.

Culture

Its medieval fabric includes a three-nave structure with three bays of different sizes, a pointed-arch, funnel-shaped portal with figurative capitals, and a tower incorporating medieval structures.

The altarpiece was created by Martín de Morgota at the end of the 16th century; around 1618, it was polychromed by the gilder Pedro de Monteagudo.

Eraul's traditional economy combined livestock farming with the cultivation of crops. Cattle, pigs, goats, sheep and borros, meaning small rams, were kept; olives, grapevines, wheat and barley grew in the fields and on the slopes.

Nature and Trails

At the entrance to the village stands the Encina de Eraul on the road between Eraul and Abárzuza.

The Eraul-Larraiza hiking trail is 13.4 km long, has an elevation gain of 450 m, takes two hours there and back, and is suitable for walking, mountain biking and horse riding.

It passes through holm oak, oak, juniper and beech forests to pastureland with views of Peña Azanza.

The hiking trail starts in Eraul and follows paths that were historically used for transporting livestock and goods, as well as connections between neighbouring villages.

Compare routes

The route from Bearin to Eraul leads from the Ermita de Santesteban de Bearin through fields and holm oak stands to Eraul.

It is accessible on foot; no difficulty level or signage is specified, and the elevation gain is approximately 100 m.

The excursion “Abárzuza via Eraul” covers just under three kilometres through fields near the holm oak stand to Eraul and then into the upper part of the village near the church.

Mirador de Lazkua is a naturally cut plateau on a limestone cliff. From there, you can enjoy views of the Allín Valley, Lokiz and Urbasa.
