Discover Asiáin: Church, Arakil and History

The parish church of La Asunción in Asiáin was built in the first half of the 16th century in the Gothic-Renaissance style.

Culture and history

Its broad rectangular nave comprises four bays; the polygonal chancel is spanned by a star-ribbed vault.

The Renaissance high altarpiece was created in two stages: the first part was made between 1575 and 1577, followed by the later extension between 1605 and 1612.

The former fortified palace of Asiáin had four corner towers; part of one tower has been preserved. Among others, it belonged to the Counts of Lerny and the Dukes of Alba.

The palace of Asiáin was listed in the kingdom's official register as a “cabo de armería”.

Asiáin was once home to renowned stonemasons and painters. There was also a productive workshop of sculptors, assemblers, architects, carpenters and painters; the stonemasons based there included Miguel de Ascárate and his son.

Numerous markets were formerly held in Asiáin.

River landscape and nature

Asiáin lies on the left bank of the Arakil. The Puente Principal was built over the Arakil River and connects Asiáin with Izu and the settlements on the right bank of the river.

A gallery-like forest of Cantabrian alders grows along this section of the Arakil. Among other species, red kites, grey herons and great crested grebes can be observed there.
