Oderitz: Dolmen Trails, San Lorenzo and Basque Architecture

Oderitz lies between Astitz and Madotz on a small slope at the foot of the Iruiondi and Irumuga mountains.

The Larrazpilgo Iruintrikuharribide circular trail leads to the Larrazpil, Lamear, Pian and Kategaina dolmens, as well as the Kategaina menhir.

Along the Jentilharribide trail, hikers can discover four of the best-preserved dolmens in the Larraun Valley: Pagamendi, Azolape, Milaldapa and Pikabotz.

Culture

San Lorenzo is a medieval church dating from around 1200 and illustrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. As a 13th-century building, it has a single rectangular nave, a flat-ended chancel and a pointed barrel vault.

Its portal has pointed arches, capitals decorated with leaves and a Christogram on the keystone of one of the archivolts.

Goikoetxea is an example of Oderitz’s vernacular architecture and features a coat of arms. Etxatoa is a 17th-century Basque farmhouse and is catalogued as part of Navarre’s historic heritage.

Nature

Jentilharribide is an easy circular hiking trail measuring 3.12 kilometres, with an elevation gain of 60 metres.

The trail was created through community work by Ondare Kultur Taldea, the Iturraskarri social project and the Concejo de Oderitz.

It passes through mossy woodland in shaded areas with visible limestone formations, as well as through meadows where livestock graze.

In 2017, the trail was modified and marked with yellow and orange lines.

Jentilharribide also offers an easy circular route through the forest that takes two and a half hours and covers 3.5 kilometres, allowing visitors to discover Oderitz’s dolmens.
