Biurrun: Gothic Church and Camino Stage

Biurrun had been an ecclesiastical lordship since the 13th century. The place soon passed into the possession of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Biurrun, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions form a concise personal framework. Beyond this accommodation information, the town’s ecclesiastical history, church art, San Cristóbal, the two types of route and the festive dish stand alongside one another as distinct topics.

Culture

The Gothic stone church in Biurrun was built in two construction phases, in the 13th century and in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its floor plan has the shape of a Latin cross, and the chancel has a polygonal ending. The high altarpiece consists of a plinth zone, five bays with two levels each and a superstructure; it is made of polychrome wood. The plinth zone depicts the Evangelists John and Luke, as well as scenes of the Last Supper, the washing of the feet, the prayer in the garden and the arrest. This gives you several levels from which to view it: the building history, spatial form, material, structure and pictorial programme can be considered separately. The spatial form and the furnishings create different accents: the Latin-cross floor plan organizes the church interior, the polygonal chancel ending marks its conclusion, and the altarpiece structures the furnishings down to the individual picture panels. In this way, the building, spatial arrangement and pictorial programme can be considered one after another without mixing up their respective characteristics. The building history, spatial form and furnishings thus provide distinct approaches to the same church interior.

Above the entrance, the tympanum of the triangular gable contains a relief of the Virgin and Child from the 16th or 17th century, as well as praying angels. The church also contains three Romanesque-style altarpieces by Domingo Bidarte and Domingo de Lussa, which were assessed in 1627. You can view the church through its building structure, spatial ending, material, articulation and individual motifs.

A different sacred form is represented by the San Cristóbal hermitage in Biurrun-Olcoz. It has a rectangular floor plan, plastered walls, a wooden pitched roof and a simple pointed-arch door. The presbytery contains a plaster altarpiece with Baroque decoration.

Routes

The Camino de Santiago stage from Biurrun to Ucar is 8.95 km long. On its route through Navarre, EuroVelo 1 also uses minor roads with little traffic. The two route details represent different bases of comparison: one gives a specific stage length, while the other describes the type of road along a regional route. For personal planning, routes can therefore be considered by distance or by the character of the roads used. If you want to distinguish between a clearly defined section and a regionally described road route, length and road type remain separate points of reference. Depending on your travel plans, the length comes to the fore for one route, while the character of the road is more prominent for the other.

At festivals, relleno con pimientos was a typical dish. Its connection with festivities adds a culinary aspect to the sacred and route-related topics.
