Betelu – Nature Trails, Culture and Holiday Apartment

Betelu is home to Zigadia-Beroate, a rare ecosystem of Mediterranean origin isolated within an Atlantic environment. In Navarre, this holm oak ecosystem forms a biological corridor between the Mediterranean and Eurosiberian biogeographical regions.

Nature

The holm oak forests of Zigadia-Beroate are designated as a natural area (EN-27). They lie on both banks of the Araxes River upstream from the town of Betelu and cover 41.3 hectares in the municipality of Betelu. The thermal springs of Betelu’s hydrothermal system are formed by the deep circulation of groundwater, contact with saline formations of the Keuper facies, and the rapid, geologically driven ascent of the water. The Mirador de las Malloas viewpoint can be reached from Betelu in about 20 minutes on foot and offers views of the steep Malloas escarpment as well as the villages and hamlets of the Araitz Valley.

Hiking and Trails

Senda de Goikola is an easy path of approximately 700 m along the Araxes River and is accessible to wheelchairs, carts and pushchairs.
