Discover Azuelo: Culture, History and Sierra de Codés

Azuelo combines cultural heritage with the limestone landscape on the southern side of the Sierra de Codés. The traditional monumental Belén is one of the town’s cultural forms of expression and depicts the landscape and traditional occupations of Azuelo. For planning purposes, culture, mountain scenery and a local event with a culinary connection can be considered as separate areas of focus.

Culture and History

The surviving church of the former Benedictine monastery of San Jorge was built at the beginning of the 12th century and altered in terms of its roof and structure in the 16th century. The two dates mark different historical phases and make the architectural development a distinct aspect in its own right.

The medieval necropolis of San Martín lies next to the spring of San Martín and features anthropomorphic graves. Coats of arms belonging to residents who attained the status of hidalgo or lord through legal disputes were placed on house façades in Azuelo. The La Calzada fountain is said to have served as a water supply for the monastery’s monks.

When planning your visit, the historical information can be differentiated by period, form and traditional function; the church, graves, house emblems and fountain each retain their own focus.

Nature

The Pico del Yoar, also known as Joar or Ioar, is part of the Azuelo area. The summit is 1,417 m high. On the southern side of the Sierra de Codés, limestone cliffs descend from Yoar (1,417 m) to Azuelo.

A challenging route with a significant difference in altitude leads to Yoar. For personal day planning, you can consider the summit elevation, rocky landscape and route character separately; the three details describe different aspects.

The information about the landscape serves different orientation purposes: the name of the summit identifies a specific point, the elevation makes its scale measurable, the cliffs describe the course of the terrain, and the route adds a challenging path. Landscape form, elevation and route character thus emerge as three distinct features.

Special Places

The restored Choza de los Pastores is a mountain hut in the Sierra de Codés. It includes a wooden cooking area, a table and concrete benches. The cisterns of the Sierra de Azuelo have also been restored. Their roofs were reconstructed in the original architectural style and topped with false domes.

When planning, natural landforms and restored structures can be considered separately without combining them into a single feature of the place.

Local Tradition

At the Día de la Matanza in Azuelo, visitors can watch how chorizos are made and attend talks. The event combines observing a traditional production process with an explicitly mentioned programme of talks.

When comparing a holiday apartment in Azuelo, you can first compare the travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective listing page. The specific conditions of the offer remain separate from the town’s cultural, landscape and culinary topics.
