Espronceda lies at the foot of the southern slope of the Sierra de Codés and on a spur of land bordered by the Linares River and one of its tributaries.

Culture

The Espronceda wayside cross is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). It stands on a double circular staircase and has a smooth, prismatic shaft with a capital-like top decorated with reliefs of saints.

The parish church of San Vicente Mártir was built in the second half of the 16th century by Cristóbal de Zúñiga and Juan de Miaja according to plans by Martín de Landerrain. It has a single-nave layout and a polygonal apse. The main altarpiece was created in the mid-17th century and depicts scenes from Christ’s childhood, saints, and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The chapel of Virgen del Campo stands within the village; it houses a Romanesque depiction of the eponymous Virgin. Palacio Acedo is a private residential building from the 17th century whose façade and structure preserve the historic character of bygone times.

The public washhouse of Espronceda is a covered stone basin that was restored between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and was connected with the village’s communal social life. The archaeological site of La Pedrigosa is located in the municipality; it is an Iron Age site with Celtiberian pottery and a pierced river stone as an artefact. The gardens of the parish church contain a statue of Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas y Crespo accompanied by two children.

Festivals and Traditions

The rural carnival of Espronceda takes place in February or March, two weekends after the actual carnival date. The residents prepare it and take care, among other things, of preparing the food, dressing Judas, sewing the costumes, writing and reading out the verdict, and gathering firewood.

During the rural carnival of Espronceda, Judas’s alleged offences are read aloud before the figure is beaten with sticks and burned at the stake. During Santa Águeda, children visit their neighbours’ homes, sing a song and ask for “un choricico señora”; the collected items are then used to prepare a merienda for them.

Espronceda’s patron-saint festivities in honour of San Miguel take place on the last weekend of September. The festival in honour of San Isidro Labrador is held on the Saturday closest to the saint’s feast day and includes a mass, a procession with special veneration of the Virgen del Campo, games for children and a communal meal.

Katxupin is held in Espronceda on the eve of a local festival. The tradition involves a fire in which the top of a tree trunk is burned; some residents use it to form a kind of train and chase other residents. Olentzero is scheduled for December 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029.

The Desojo–Espronceda route is 15.1 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 410 metres and a stated duration of 3 hours and 10 minutes. From the higher sections, the steppe vegetation and the elevations of the Sierra de Codés, Figueras and the Altos de la Dehesa can be viewed.
