Eulate between Urbasa-Andía and the Sierra de Lóquiz

In Eulate, the Sendero de Améscoa Alta SL-NA 282 trail begins next to the Lavadero de Gonea washhouse. It connects Larraona, Aranarache and Eulate via old roads and paths along the southern slope of the Urbasa-Andía Natural Park. Another route is the Eulate-Lokiz circular trail: it is 5.9 kilometres long, begins at the Lavadero de Gonea washhouse in Eulate and ends at Eulate’s lower washhouse. The difference in elevation is 168 metres, and the stated duration is 1.5 hours.

Nature

The Urbasa-Andía Natural Park combines beech forests with open grazing areas where livestock graze. It was designated a natural park because of the richness and good state of conservation of its diverse habitats, flora and fauna, as well as its distinctive landscape. Its defining features also include caves, shafts and other underground formations, as well as impressive vertical rock walls such as Ubaba.

The municipality of Eulate extends into the Sierra de Lóquiz. This range protects representative natural habitats as well as wild plants and animals; some of these features are considered endangered or have a geographically limited natural distribution. The Sierra de Lóquiz is designated as the Zona Especial de Conservación ES2200022 and also includes parts of the municipality of Eulate.

The Urbasa y Andía Natural Park includes Monte Limitaciones; its southern boundary borders the municipality of Eulate. Monte Limitaciones is a communal mountain in the southwest of the Urbasa-Andía Natural Park. Eulate is one of the villages of Améscoa Alta with ownership and usage rights to this mountain.

Trails

The Sendero de Lóquiz-Urbasa-Eulate SL-NA 280 is a circular trail that begins in Eulate, heading south to the lower area of the Sierra de Lóquiz and north to the Sierra de Urbasa. It passes through grazing areas, oak groves and beech forests. From the high points of Alto de Isusura and Alto de Koparazio, there are excellent views across the Valle de Améscoa Alta.

Monte Limitaciones can be visited on foot or by bicycle via routes suitable for cycling; access by motor vehicle is restricted to authorised vehicles. The Valle de las Améscoas information point has panels highlighting points of interest in Monte Limitaciones and the Améscoa valleys.

Culture

Several houses dating from the 16th century can be seen in the centre of Eulate. The exterior façade of the parish church of San Martín consists of a fine ashlar stonework ensemble with a polygonal apse and corresponding prismatic buttresses dating from the 16th century. The church was moved to its present location, rebuilt and consecrated there in 1780.

The Ermita de San Juan Bautista is a 13th-century building in the Proto-Gothic style. It was Eulate’s original parish church and, together with the church of San Martín de Tours, continued to serve this function until its last mention as a parish church in 1711; it was then classified as a chapel. The Humilladero, known as “El Calvario”, stands by the road at the eastern entrance to Eulate and is a Flamboyant Gothic building from the early 16th century.

The Palacio de Eulate is a 16th-century Renaissance palace; its ruins were excavated and consolidated in 2010. The existence of a significant palace or manor house in Eulate associated with the Eulate lineage has been documented since the 14th century. Between the 14th and 17th centuries, Eulate had a “tabla”, that is, a customs post for goods leaving Navarre.

Festivals

Eulate’s patron saint festivities in honour of Saint Peter take place on the last weekend of June. The winter festivities are celebrated in November, around 20 November. The Día del Pastor de Améscoa has been held in Eulate in October since 2012.

The Día del Pastor in Eulate includes a market for handicrafts and regional food, exhibitions and activities for the whole family. Cheese and lamb can be sampled at this festival.
