El Busto – Church, Manor Houses and Festival Traditions

El Busto is home to the parish church of San Andrés, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages; in the 16th century, it was largely rebuilt in the Gothic-Renaissance style.

Culture

The church has a single-nave layout with two bays of unequal length, a polygonal apse and rib vaults. Its architecture thus brings together different forms of construction without losing the clear structure of the interior.

The main altarpiece is an outstanding example of Navarrese retable art from the second third of the 16th century and is stylistically linked to the circle of Riojan masters around Arnao de Bruselas. Its iconographic programme tells the story of salvation: it begins with themes from the Passion of Christ and ends in the upper section with Calvary.

At the same time, the altarpiece shows an early reception of Michelangelo's models in Navarre, including the telamons supporting the tabernacle. The building history of the tower can also still be discerned: the remains of the original church tower were incorporated into a Baroque design drawn up in 1728.

Calle San Andrés runs lengthwise through El Busto and is lined with historic manor houses bearing coats of arms, including those of the Fernández and Ramírez de Ganuza families, as well as the coat of arms of Miguel Fernández de Melque.

Landscape

The area around El Busto displays a clear contrast in its landscape. To the north lies a flat area at elevations between 430 and 460 metres. The higher and more varied southern area forms the north-eastern slope of Socuenca, reaching an elevation of 571 metres. These elevations make the transition between the plain and the slope immediately comparable.

Traditions

On the first Sunday in May, El Busto holds celebrations in honour of the Virgen de Nieva, the patron saint of the town. They begin with a Mass accompanied by a concert. The celebrations also include a procession through the streets of El Busto, during which the faithful accompany the image of the Virgin with songs and prayers.

The feast day of the patron saint San Andrés is celebrated on 30 November with a solemn Mass and a procession through the town's streets. This is followed by refreshments provided by the Ayuntamiento.

Together with Bargota and Lazagurría, El Busto observes the long-standing tradition of a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Codés.

On the eve of the feast of San Andrés, a bonfire is lit; the occasion also includes a chistorrada.
