Culture and Architectural History
The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the mid-13th century and altered in the following centuries through the addition of further extensions. Together with Santa María de Olite and San Saturnino de Artajona, the parish church belongs to the earliest ensembles of the so-called royal Gothic style in Navarre. This architectural form is connected with the architecture of the French Midi and with adaptations made by mendicant orders such as the Franciscans.
Inside, the main altarpiece created by José de San Juan y Martín between 1696 and 1703 is one of the notable works: it was executed in the Churrigueresque style. The church also preserves a Renaissance choir stall with Mannerist ornamentation, created in the 1560s by Juan de Bayona and Nicolás de Berástegui. The Capilla de la Soledad houses a museum with sculptures and other objects from the parish church of Miranda de Arga and the Basílica del Castillo.
On the hill above the old town, El Torreón preserves the remains of a medieval fortress. Because of its elevated location and proximity to the former Muslim frontier, the site occupied a strategically important position in Navarre’s defensive system. The fortress was rebuilt in the 19th century in connection with the Carlist Wars, particularly the Third Carlist War.
Next to El Torreón, on an open area of Alto de los Moros, stands the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Castillo. It was built in the 17th century and serves as a venue for religious celebrations during the patron-saint festivals of Miranda de Arga. Architectural and decorative features from this period have been preserved, including a dome on pendentives with a lantern and a main altarpiece executed towards the end of the 17th century in the early Baroque style.
The Palacio de los Colomo, also known as Casa de las Torres or Casa de los Colomo, was commissioned by Juan José Vizcaíno y Vizcaíno, a nobleman from Miranda de Arga and a knight of the Order of Santiago. Construction began in 1695 and continued well into the 18th century. Two side towers with square floor plans define the building.
The Torre del Reloj was completed in the advanced Mudéjar style during the 16th century. It is considered an example of a cultural symbiosis in which Christian and Islamic cultures coexisted.
River, Routes and Historic Landscape
The bridge of Miranda de Arga crosses the Arga River and carries the road from Tafalla across the river. Its eight pointed arches form the main entrance to and exit from Miranda de Arga across the Arga and facilitate the connection towards Tafalla. The bridge, with its eight arches, dates back to a Gothic construction phase.
From Pamplona, San Sebastián or France, access is via the AP-15 to Tafalla and then along the NA-6140. Another testimony to the local infrastructure is La Mina, a historic irrigation system that channels water from the river to the irrigated plots of Miranda de Arga.
On a rise stands the former church of the settlement of Cahués, which was later converted into a hermitage. From there, there are beautiful views over the course of the Arga River. From the southern edge of Miranda de Arga, the hermitage can be reached via the path through the Barranco de San Juan.
Festivals and Living Traditions
The patron-saint festivals of Miranda de Arga begin on 23 August and last for one week. The town hall and local associations organise activities for residents and visitors. The San Benito festival is celebrated on the weekend closest to 21 March and fills Miranda de Arga with costumes, music and various activities for three days.
Every third Sunday in June, traditional occupations and scenes from everyday life are reenacted. There is also a market, demonstrations of old crafts, street entertainment and guided tours.
