Bera in Navarre opens the cultural perspective with a specific date: Bera Town Hall was built in 1776 in the neoclassical style. The Church of San Esteban was originally built as a Gothic tower house and was remodelled and extended in 1632. It houses an organ created by Amezua and Jauregi with three manuals, considered the finest Romantic organ in Navarre.

Itzea was built in the second half of the 17th century. Its double wooden roof overhang is derived from Renaissance models found on houses and palaces in Navarre and Aragon from the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th centuries. The Baroja family settled in Itzea in 1912; Carmen, Pío and Ricardo Baroja, as well as Julio Caro Baroja, created a large part of their work there from then on.

Festivals and Customs

On Corpus Christi, also known as Besta Berri, a procession takes place in Bera. It is accompanied by the txistu music Alkate soinua; the piece originates from Bera and was composed for this day.

On Monday, the main day of Carnival in Bera, Zingar-arraultze is collected from the farmsteads and neighbourhoods.

The Día de la Tierra festival, held on the fourth Sunday in October, is organised by Bera Town Hall and Sociedad Gure Txokoa; it features craftspeople, cheese and cider competitions, an exhibition of local products, music and dancing.

Landscape and Routes

The landscape around Bera is drained from east to west by the Regata Zia into the Bidasoa; depending on the section, the watercourse is called Lamixene and Izpoz.

Larún can be reached on foot from Bera. The Bidasoa Greenway includes the section from Zalain Zoko in Bera to Endarlatsa, which is closed until further notice. The Greenway follows the route of the former railway line «Tren txikito», which connected Elizondo and Irun.
