Dorrao among meadows, rocks and religious buildings

Dorrao is a rural village set among meadows and rocks in the foothills of the Sierra de Aralar. It lies on the right bank of the Leziza stream, a tributary of the Arakil River.

The NA-7101 road provides access to Dorrao, also known as Torrano. It is 0.66 km long and branches off from the NA-7100 at kilometre point 2.09. The Ermita de San Juan Bautista is located at the start of this junction; the road connects Dorrao with the road to Puerto de Lizarraga.

Landscape

Dorrao is one of the three districts of Ergoiena in Navarre's Basque-speaking zone. Basque is still present in everyday life. The route passes by the Ermita de San Pedro, through the forest on the southern slope, via Fagomotxeta and the old path to Goñi into the area around Peña Blanca. It continues to Peña Blanca and the Lizarraga Tunnel before returning to Dorrao.

Culture

The Ermita de Santo Tomás stands on a hill and is about a fifteen-minute walk away. Dorrao also has a church built in the Late Gothic style in the 16th century, which was altered later.

The presbytery of this church contains a large, richly decorated Baroque altarpiece from the first half of the 18th century. Parts of various altarpieces were reused for this altarpiece. On the edge of Dorrao stands a church building with a rustic covered porch, which protects the faithful from bad weather.
