Discover Oronz: Hiking Trails, Waterfalls and Pyrenean Architecture

The circular route to the Orkatua Waterfall begins in Oronz, passing by the San Pedro Hermitage and climbing through the Azurre Gorge to the waterfall. The route is 6.7 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 320 metres. After reaching the Orkatua Waterfall, the trail follows the Iturrotza Path through the forest, crosses the river in the gorge and continues along a forest track to a signposted junction with the Sierra Path and the path back to Oronz.

Hiking

The SL-NA 63 “Camino de la Sierra” hiking trail begins in the upper part of Oronz, near the church. It is 3.3 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 170 metres. It runs through forests of pine, oak, beech and fir trees, while also offering views of Oronz and its surroundings.

The PR-NA 61 “Monterría” route begins behind the church in Oronz and is signposted as far as the Santa Cruz Hermitage. It is 13.5 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 490 metres and takes approximately 4 hours to walk. Another circular route in the wider surroundings of Oronz connects the Orkatua Waterfall in Oronz with the Xoxo Waterfall in Ezcároz over approximately 10 kilometres.

The different route lengths, elevation gains and approximate walking times provide an objective basis for comparison when planning different hiking days.

Nature

The landscape around Oronz includes beech and oak forests. Eocene flysch formations are exposed within the municipal area, forming distinctive steep slopes.

In the wider surroundings of Oronz, Andrasoroa lies between Ezcároz and Oronz. The area is a recreational site and a representative botanical garden with a car park and picnic areas; it has been prepared for visitors.

Location

Oronz is a stop on the route between Pamplona and Ochagavía in both directions.

Culture

The Oronz Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in the valley and is built of limestone. It played an important role in the history of timber transport, as it was one of the landing places for the rafts that travelled down the Salazar River. A raft landing at the bridge forms part of Oronz’s intangible cultural heritage.

Salazar Basque was the language used in everyday life in Oronz for centuries. Today, it is considered valuable intangible cultural heritage of Oronz and is being researched, revived and promoted.

Oronz’s patron-saint festivities take place on the third weekend of June. The festivities in Oronz are focused on meeting others, living together and the participation of residents and visitors.

History and Architecture

The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Oronz is a single-nave building from the 13th century with a pointed barrel vault. It houses an important main altarpiece from 1616, carved by Juan de Echenagusia. A Gothic grille door from the 15th century closes off the baptistery, while a Gothic crucifix from the 14th century has been preserved in the church wall.

Oronz’s traditional Pyrenean architecture includes solid houses with stone coats of arms. Traditional houses in Oronz have roofs made of flat tiles with a steep pitch, designed to cope with snow.
