Carcastillo between the Monastery, Aragón and Bardenas Reales

Culture

The restored historic buildings of La Oliva Monastery in Carcastillo include a 12th-century church, a Gothic cloister from the 14th and 15th centuries, and an abbot's palace from the 16th century, which now houses the monastery hostel. The history of La Oliva Monastery began in the first half of the 12th century. Under Navarre's cultural heritage legislation, it is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

In addition to its religious functions, the monastery also serves tourist and cultural purposes. Cistercian monastic life resumed in 1926 after a 90-year interruption. The monastery shop sells its own products, such as wine, oil and rice. The day on which the flocks enter the Bardena is designated as a traditional usage date.

Nature

From Carcastillo, you can reach the Bardenas Reales via El Paso, a desert landscape with rock formations shaped by wind and rain and UNESCO biosphere reserve status. The Monumento al Pastor stands at the entrance; the Cañada Real de los Roncaleses runs through it. The unpaved road from Carcastillo into the Bardenas Reales via El Paso joins the park's perimeter route. In the area accessible from Carcastillo via El Paso, there are two short walking trails and ten cycling routes.

Hiking

The Paseo fluvial del Aragón begins in Carcastillo, crosses the Aragón over a bridge and includes a section of road without a pedestrian crossing. This 12.34-kilometre linear hiking trail, rated low in difficulty, connects Carcastillo and Santacara along the Aragón and the Caparroso Canal. It passes through riparian forests designated as natural areas and along slopes near the Bardenas Reales. During the hunting season, it runs through areas where big and small game are hunted.

Ruta 8. Presa de Carcastillo y Mirador de Larrate is a 10.1-kilometre circular route with a walking time of approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes; its starting point is on Calle San Francisco Javier. It leads from Carcastillo to the dam and via El Estrecho to Llano de Larrate and its viewpoint, then returns along a pine-lined path and follows the road to Cáseda on the descent. Ruta 8 passes through different ecosystems in a landscape of historic significance and ecological value. A footpath connects Carcastillo town centre with La Oliva Monastery. The linear trail and the circular route offer different types of routes and time frames side by side; their lengths and walking times make the time commitment comparable.
