Jaurrieta – Church, Forests and Pyrenees Panorama

Culture and Townscape

In the centre of Jaurrieta stands the parish church of El Salvador, a Gothic building. It preserves a Romanesque depiction of the Virgen Blanca from the late 12th century and also contains a 16th-century Plateresque Renaissance altarpiece from the Ermita de San Pedro.

The Ermita de San Pedro preserves a 16th-century altarpiece featuring alternating paintings and sculptures. The Ermita de la Virgen Blanca is a rural Romanesque building from the 13th century on a hill surrounded by centuries-old oak forests. From Jaurrieta’s lower quarter, a path equipped with a stone Stations of the Cross leads uphill to this ermita.

The traditional townscape is characterised by roofs with flat tiles, which replaced the earlier wooden shingle or wooden-board roofing after the fire of 1880. Jaurrieta’s round-arched portals bear heraldic coats of arms.

The festivities in honour of the Virgen Blanca take place in Jaurrieta from 15 to 18 August and include a pilgrimage to the Ermita de la Virgen Blanca. For 15 August, the Neska Dantza, also known as Axuri Beltza, is named as a sung girls’ dance or as a singing dance performed by women in a circle, connected with the morning pilgrimage to the Ermita de la Virgen Blanca and the subsequent journey to Jaurrieta’s town centre; the dancers wear the traditional costume of the Salazar Valley.

Forests, Trails and Water

Jaurrieta’s tree vegetation includes Scots pines, beech forests and oak forests. In the municipality, at Puerto de Remendía towards Abaurrea Alta, there is a recreational area equipped for visitors with parking spaces and marked trails.

The Balcón de Beiegu hiking trail, SL®-NA 61, is 3.5 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 150 metres; it offers the chance to experience natural forests as well as panoramas over the Salazar Valley and the Pyrenees. Its starting point can be reached via a paved track at the highest point of the road between Jaurrieta and Ezcároz.

The Portillo de Contín hiking trail, SL®-NA 65-A, is 4.7 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 240 metres. The trail leads through the surrounding forests and ends in an elongated pasture. The different trail lengths and landscapes provide a clear basis for comparison when planning a day trip.

There is a river bathing area on the Zatoia River towards Abaurrea Alta-Abaurregaina. The land-consolidation paths around Jaurrieta are suitable for exploring the surrounding nature by mountain bike. A short walking trail circles the fields of Llano de Remendia and leads to the source of the Urdindu stream.

The PR®-NA 60 UDI route runs between Ochagavía, Udi, Jaurrieta and Ezcároz.

Surroundings

Near Jaurrieta lies Orreaga-Roncesvalles on the Way of St. James. It is home to the medieval Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María, which formerly served as a pilgrim hospital. Also nearby is the Selva de Irati, a beech and fir forest covering more than 17,000 hectares and extending across the Salazar and Aezkoa valleys.
