Sangüesa – Holiday Apartment on the Camino de Santiago

Sangüesa has been an important stage on the Camino de Santiago since the mid-12th century.

Culture and History

The Iglesia Santa María la Real was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural by the Government of Navarre in 1997. Its Romanesque portal, dating from the late 12th century, is considered one of the most important works of its style. It depicts the Last Judgment; scenes from medieval society appear in the archivolts, including pilgrims, musicians and craftsmen.

The Iglesia de Santiago is a Romanesque-Gothic fortified church with a square tower crowned with battlements. It houses a Gothic stone representation of Santiago Peregrino from the early 14th century and was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico in 1977.

The Palacio Castillo Príncipe de Viana was built into the city wall and moat between two towers. Today, it consists of a two-storey central section flanked by two towers crowned with battlements. Numerous sessions of the Cortes del Reino were held there, and many Navarrese monarchs stayed for extended periods.

The Casa Consistorial was built in 1570 and features an arcaded gallery with flat arches. The Puente sobre el río Aragón was built at the end of the 11th century as a crossing from Navarre to Aragón; in 1892, its three central stone arches were demolished and replaced by the present-day metal bridge.

Trails and Landscape

The Senderos de Uñesa begin beside Calle Mayor in Sangüesa's medieval old town and lead for 12 kilometres through landscapes rich in history and nature. They continue to the Romeral viewpoint, from where the Aragón Valley and the Pyrenees, with the Sierra de Leyre in the foreground, can be seen.

The 15 kilometres of the Río Aragón within the municipality of Sangüesa are designated as a Zona Especial de Conservación. Sangüesa brings together different travel purposes: travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions provide the practical framework for a holiday apartment. The Camino de Santiago, architectural heritage, trails and the September tradition of the Pocha represent separate thematic focuses. This information can be considered side by side when planning a personal trip, without any one purpose replacing the other perspectives.

Flavours and Festivals

Pocha is a fresh white bean eaten seasonally; its short season coincides with September. Elogio a la Pocha takes place every year at the end of September and includes a market with products from the region, handicrafts, tastings of Pochas, wine, accompanying products and music.

Religious Traditions

Misterio de Reyes is an annual open-air performance of the Auto Sacramental de los Reyes Magos in Sangüesa and one of only five such performances in Spain. The performance ends with a Mass in the Iglesia de Santiago.
