Saragüeta: Holiday apartment between the Roman road and architectural heritage

The route of the Roman road of Arce-Artzibar begins at Plaza de San Juan in Saragüeta. It runs for almost eight kilometres between Saragüeta and Santa María de Arce, following a section of the former Roman road between Zaragoza and Bordeaux. A large part of the route runs together with EuroVelo3 along the middle slope and offers wide-ranging views. The historic alignment and the shared route with EuroVelo3 give the path a dual reading between the past and the cycle route. Culture

The Church of San Juan Bautista in Saragüeta has medieval origins. It is a single-nave building with a rectangular chancel and two chapels. Inside the church is a Neoclassical high altar from the second half of the 18th century, which reuses several painted panels from the 16th century. The building, altar and panels thus represent different periods. Those who look closely at architecture can distinguish between spatial form, period and pictorial motif.

Under a simple wayside shrine known as “la ermita”, Saragüeta has a Renaissance boundary cross. It depicts Christ, the Virgin Mary, Saint John and a kneeling pilgrim.

History

Saragüeta preserves a late Gothic house with two attached building sections and partially bricked-up round-arched doors. The washhouse on the outskirts of Saragüeta has preserved its roof and stone basin and illustrates the traditional use of water. The centre of Saragüeta is grouped around a spring with two outlets, historically known as “Fuente del Moro”.

Saragüeta has an interpretation centre called “Gentes de película”, dedicated to preserving the memory of Montxo Armendáriz’s film shoots. Saragüeta was one of the villages in the Artze Valley used as filming locations for the film “Silencio roto”. Pilgrims from Saragüeta belong to the second group setting out from Arrieta.
