San Martín de Unx – Romanesque Architecture, Vineyards and Rosé Wine

San Martín de Unx is surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra de Ujué and the Sierra de Guerinda; the area is suitable for hiking and cycling. Here, different impressions come together within a short distance of one another, amid vineyards, medieval streets and Romanesque churches.

Nature

The “Ruta del Rosado” is a 9-kilometre cycling route of low difficulty for the whole family through the vineyards of San Martín de Unx, which are mainly used for rosé wines. It passes through a landscape of vineyards, elms and poplars along the Barranco de Torres; its route follows the service road of the Canal de Navarra. The different route lengths and modes of travel make the paths comparable for personal day planning.

For orientation in the town, there is a municipal car park in the immediate vicinity of the main square. There is also a parking area suitable for motorhomes next to the municipal swimming pools of San Martín de Unx.

Culture

The Church of San Martín de Tours is a Romanesque building with striking sculptural decoration. Its crypt lies beneath the presbytery and part of the nave. The church also contains a Romanesque baptismal font with depictions of human figures.

The Church of Santa María del Pópulo was built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries. It was attached to the town wall and was for a time part of that wall. A building was converted from a private mansion into a place open for communal use and now serves as an extension of the public space – a place for passing through, meeting and spending time.

Other town pages in the Navarre selection are Galbarra, Oláibar, Espronceda, Carcastillo, Navascués, Urdiain, Ultzama and Berrioplano.
