Ultzama: Beech Forests, Trails and History

The Ultzama Mycological Park covers 5,566 hectares of forest of mycological importance, primarily communally managed beech forests and Atlantic oak forests.

Nature

The Bosque de Orgi is considered the only remaining example of Navarre’s humid oak forests. Guided tours and cultural activities are offered there. The Ultzama Mycological Park organises guided mycological excursions throughout the year. In Arraitz Orkin, the Roble milenario is catalogued as one of Navarre’s 47 monumental trees; its trunk has an approximate circumference of 10 metres. At Puerto de Belate, a network of forest paths runs between streams and beech forests.

Activities

In Ultzama, walks on foot, on horseback and by mountain bike can be started from the villages and forests. The Sendero de Orgi is an 8.5-kilometre circular route that passes through Lizaso, Gorrontz-Olano and Guelbenzu. The Sendero de Auzarabide is a 7.10-kilometre circular route through Zenotz, Iraizotz and Larrainzar. The different route lengths make it easier to compare both circular routes according to the desired distance. The Robledales de Ultzama equestrian centre in Zenotz specialises in classical dressage. The Doble A riding facility in Lizaso offers horseback and pony rides as well as riding lessons. The riding activities of Hípica Ulzama are temporarily suspended due to maternity leave.

Culture

The Casa-museo Apicultura Ezkurdi has a beekeeping laboratory where visitors can learn about the life of bees and the production of honey in the hive. The Casa-museo Apicultura Ezkurdi also has an exhibition on the history of beekeeping. The museum is open year-round for guided tours by prior arrangement. The Granja Escuela Ultzama offers guided visits during which visitors can get to know the animals kept there. During visits to the Granja Escuela Ultzama, visitors can learn about the complete production process and take part in tastings. The Granja Escuela Ultzama also offers workshops on the traditional production of cuajada. The 12th edition of the Día de la Cuajada was announced for 11 June 2023 in Larraintzar, Ultzama.

History

The Cueva de Abauntz in Arraitz-Orkin, Ultzama, has an archaeological sequence of occupation from the Mousterian to the fall of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity. The Abauntz map from Arraitz-Orkin, Ultzama, is displayed in a new showcase in the permanent prehistoric exhibition at the Museo de Navarra. The Abauntz map is dated to 9815 BC; its engravings depict geographical features in the area around the cave, including the Zaldazáin stream and the Ultzama River. The Iglesia parroquial de la Asunción in Arraitz has an octagonal tower. Larraintzar has a Romanesque bridge and a Renaissance church.
