Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja – Circular Routes and Local History

Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja lies on the edge of the Irati Forest and in a depression. The original vegetation in the municipality consisted mainly of beech, pine and oak trees. Nature and Routes

The circular hiking route “Paisaje enogastronómico – Entre las Abaurreas por prados y bosques” connects Abaurregaina/Abaurrea Alta and Abaurrepea/Abaurrea Baja. Another circular route leads from Abaurrea Baja to the Cueva de Aginaga. It is 7.4 km long, has an elevation gain of 335 m and takes approximately 3 hours.

The SL NA-54 Camino de las Abaurreas circular hiking trail starts in Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja and is 5.6 kilometres long. Its route leads from Abaurregaina/Abaurrea Alta along the old path between the two villages and back to the starting point in Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja. The different route lengths and paths provide a clear basis for comparison when planning your day.

The SL NA-50B Cuevas de Asketaldea circular hiking trail also starts in Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja. On this route, the Cueva de Asketaldea lies a few metres beyond a gate, while the path passes several old lime kilns. The route then descends through an area with pollarded beech trees and passes close to a spring surrounded by unusually shaped oak trees.

The Cueva de Asketaldea is a natural site near the centre of Abaurrea Baja and can be reached via the local hiking trail.

For day planning, the routes can be distinguished by their character: the route to the Cueva de Aginaga combines a specific distance with elevation gain and duration, while the SL NA-54 highlights the connection between the two villages and the old path. The SL NA-50B complements this selection during the hike with lime kilns, beech trees, a spring and oaks.

Culture and History

The Church of San Martín de Tours in Abaurrepea is a Gothic religious building dating from the 14th century. It has an altarpiece; inside, a grille separates the altar area from the area for worshippers. Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja was burned down and devastated several times throughout its history.

At the entrance to Abaurrepea stands a wayside cross from the 16th century. The cross has suffered damage associated with warfare in the 19th century.

There is a mill in the Errotaldea area. In Abaurrepea, there are also the ruins of a house known as Casa de la Inquisición. Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja is considered the oldest settlement in the Aezkoa Valley.
