Discover Mués: Roman history, churches and trails

The archaeological zone of the Presa romana de Mues is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The 50-metre-long and 5-metre-high Presa romana de Mues dammed the waters of the Odrón River in order to channel them to a Roman city downstream.

Culture

In Mués, the Iglesia de Santa Eugenia is a 13th-century proto-Gothic building in the Cistercian style. It was remodelled in the 16th century and again in the 19th century. The Casa palacio de Mués features an 18th-century Baroque coat of arms made of hewn stone on its façade.

The Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuesta is a Baroque chapel built at the beginning of the 18th century. Dating from the late 12th century, the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena is an example of rural Navarrese Romanesque architecture in transition to the proto-Gothic style. At the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena, the exterior can be viewed freely and free of charge; the interior is not regularly accessible. The Parque escultórico Pablo Nogales is an open-air sculpture museum featuring works in various formats.

History

Cábrega had been documented as a centre of aristocratic power since the 11th century and had a fortress, its own castellan, and revenues connected with the Crown of Navarre. At the Señorío de Cábrega, the exterior can be viewed freely and free of charge; the estate is privately owned and the interior is not accessible to visitors. The Señorío de Cábrega can be reached from Mués via the NA-129 and NA-7410 roads; the journey may take around 50 minutes.

The Castro de Murillo preserves its walls and dominates a strategic crossing. It was abandoned in the 1st century BC.

Nature

The Monumento Natural Nº 3 Encino de Cábrega was declared a natural monument in 1991 and reaches a total height of 14.70 metres. From the hamlet of Cábrega, cross the road and follow a rural land-consolidation path for approximately 140 metres to reach the Encino de Cábrega. The Fuente abrevadero de Mués has two outlets, each supplying a trough-shaped livestock watering basin with water.

Trails and customs

The signposted hiking route “De Codés a Mues por la sierra de Cábrega” ends in Mués. The “De Mues a San Gregorio Ostiense” route passes the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuesta and is marked with green-and-white SL signs. The two routes can be distinguished by their destinations and the marked route guidance.
