San Sebastián de los Reyes – Nature, Culture and Motorsport

San Sebastián de los Reyes combines signposted trails through municipal natural areas with cultural history, festive traditions and motorsport. There are three nature routes for walking, cycling or horse riding; paths and livestock trails connect the municipal natural areas with one another.

Nature and Landscape

The Dehesa Boyal is integrated into the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares and the “Cuencas altas de los ríos Manzanares, Lozoya y Guadarrama” Biosphere Reserve. The Mediterranean woodland of the Dehesa Boyal offers visitors space for walking, sporting activities and observing nature.

The Jarama River runs for more than 11 km from north to south along a large part of the eastern municipal boundary of San Sebastián de los Reyes. Its banks are home to diverse vegetation and a rich variety of amphibian and bird species. The sections of the Jarama and Guadalix rivers within the municipality also belong to the Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) “Cuenca de los ríos Jarama y Henares” and are integrated into the Natura 2000 network.

Routes and Experiences

Route 2 passes through Parque de los Arroyos, the Dehesa Boyal and Tempranales. Route 3 follows the Colada del Camino de Barajas a Torrelaguna through urban developments. The named landscape and residential areas give the two routes clearly distinguishable courses.

The Circuito del Jarama hosts national championship races and its own RACE competitions, such as the Trofeo Race de Turismos and the Trofeo Race de Motociclismo. The events programme also includes driving courses, dynamic vehicle tests, advertising shoots and other events for motorsport enthusiasts.

Culture and History

El Caserón on Plaza de la Constitución is a renovated and extended large agricultural residential and farm building from the 17th century, whose essential architectural elements have been preserved. The building houses a museum of art and folk traditions. It conveys the town’s former agricultural and livestock-rearing past, as well as its economic and social development over the centuries.

A church in the historic centre of San Sebastián de los Reyes dates from the 15th and early 16th centuries. Its origins are Mudéjar; following later works, the interior is predominantly Baroque.

On Plaza de Andrés Caballero “El Calavera”, a bronze monument depicts three life-size bulls and three life-size runners. A theatre in San Sebastián de los Reyes is stylistically inspired by the Spanish Corral de Comedias and combines this model with modern architectural approaches for the performing arts.

Fiestas and Local Traditions

The fiestas in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios take place from 24 August to 1 September. They are classified as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico and include more than 230 activities, with religious events, traditional bull-running events, gastronomy, family entertainment and music.

As part of a festive culinary competition organised by the municipality, Calderetas de carne de toro are sampled.
